2013 Yamaha V-Star 950 Review

Long, Low and Ready to Go.

A double downtube steel frame gives the 2013 Yamaha V-Star 950 the longest wheelbase in its class, while a fuel injected, forward mounted engine backs major power under your low 26.5 inch seat height.

Looking for a new generation cruiser that is fun to ride and easy to operate?

A cruiser that features a full size chassis, high quality fit and finish plus a super low seat height. The V-Star 950 offers class leading performance and plenty of cruiser character so you can discover your free spirit in comfort and style.

2013 Yamaha V-Star 950 Key Features

US MPG Fuel Consumption: 47 mpg; Fuel Consumption ± 20kpl/57mpg(Imp)

Air-cooled, 942cc, SOHC, 4-valve, V-Twin power plant

Long, low, agile chassis with user friendly 675mm (26.6") seat height

V Star 950 is the benchmark in the entry cruiser class, appealing to seasoned riders as well as those looking for a friendly entry-level cruiser. The air-cooled V-twin delivers plenty of distinctive, big-cruiser character and pulsing torque feel. Seat height is an extra-low 26.6 inches. The full-sized chassis has a long, low look and provides spacious comfort. Handling is sporty and responsive, great for curvy back roads and commuting around town as well as open-highway cruising. No wonder V-Twin Magazine named V Star 950 the 2009 “Metric of the Year”!

The 942cc 60° V-twin engine is both simple and sophisticated. Sure, there’s no-fuss air cooling for traditional looks. But inside you’ll find the reason for the surprisingly spirited performance: four-valve cylinder heads, ceramic-composite-lined cylinders, forged aluminum pistons, and fuel injection. The meticulously tuned 2-into-1 exhaust system has a throaty exhaust note, and also 3-way catalyst technology to reduce air pollution.

The carefully designed chassis contributes to an exceptionally light feeling riders are sure to appreciate. The double-cradle steel main frame offers an ideal rigidity balance in the longitudinal, lateral, and torsional directions, using the engine as a stressed member. With the engine mounting position slightly forward for optimum front-rear weight distribution and its large, 18-inch front wheel, V Star
950 has outstanding handling performance.

The V Star 950 achieves fuel economy up to an estimated 47 mpg* with a fuel tank that holds 4.5 gallons of gas.

Fender are real steel, front and rear. That adds to the quality look and feel, and makes customization easier.

2013 Yamaha V-Star 950 Features and Benefits

Engine:

• 942cc, air-cooled, SOHC, 4-valves per cylinder, 60° V-twin engine produces outstanding low- and mid-range torque - maximum torque is reached at only 3,500 rpm - for exceptional cruising performance.

• One-piece cylinder heads feature 4-valves per cylinder to provide optimum volumetric or filling efficiency for maximum power output. More fuel / air mixture entering the combustion chamber means increased power output. Two smaller intake valves allow more air flow than a single large valve. Two smaller valves (lighter) also allow for higher rpms before valve float.

• Pent roof type combustion design with optimized squish area forces the fuel / air mixture toward the centre of the combustion chamber (and the centrally located long reach spark plug) for faster, more complete combustion and hence improved power and reduced emissions.

• Cylinder heads feature buff polished fins for a quality appearance, while the cylinder head covers are chromed.

• The SOHC valve train features 31.5mm intake and 28mm exhaust valves with single valve springs which reduce friction and power losses. Specially designed "Y" shaped rocker arms activate the valves. The roller rocker system utilizes needle bearings that "roll" directly on the cam lobes allowing the lift of 2 valves at the same time without producing excessive camshaft wear and friction.

• Auto adjusting cam chain tensioners are used to reduce mechanical engine noise and maintenance

• Lightweight "liner-less" aluminium cylinders feature ceramic composite plating for superior heat dissipation for excellent cooling, less friction, reduced weight and longer engine life.

• Single pin style crankshaft is used to enhance engine character and exhaust note.

• Flat top, lightweight forged aluminium pistons provide excellent durability while reducing reciprocating mass for fast throttle response.

• Wet sump oil delivery system features an easy access spin-on type oil filter. A traditional dipstick is used to check oil level.

• Classic side mounted, large capacity, 3 litre air box houses an easy access, high-flow viscous paper-type filter. Its design highlights and compliments the V-twin engine appearance. The outer cover is chromed.

• Dual bore, 35mm throttle body fuel injection system with TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and ISC (Idle Speed Control). This is a "closed loop" system that utilizes a heated oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor feeds back info to the ECU which in turn adjusts the fuel/air mixture for maximum power with minimum emissions. The oxygen sensor is located before the mufflers, so the use of aftermarket slip-on mufflers will not affect this system.

• 4-hole, 2-directional spray, Denso fuel injectors are used for excellent fuel atomization and more complete combustion chamber filling. There is one injector per cylinder.

• Fuel injection benefits include improved fuel economy; choke-less starting, reduced emissions, and smoother drivability. The XVS950 has been tuned to provide a very "linear" throttle response for easy riding.

• Maintenance-free transistor controlled ignition (T.C.I.) provides a hot spark for sure starts and strong engine performance.

• Powerful 32 bit ECU controls the ignition and fuel injection process

• Stylish 2 into 1 exhaust system features a 3-way honeycomb-type catalyzer at the entry point to the muffler. The catalyser reduces harmful exhaust emissions, while the "dual stage type" muffler produces a low, throaty V-Twin exhaust note.

• Multi-plate "outer pull type'" wet clutch is used. Lever pull is light and easy.

• 5-speed transmission features optimized gear ratios for excellent city and highway drivability. Transmission gears use "straight cut dogs" for smooth, positive shifting. 5th gear delivers outstanding cruising performance and reduced rpms at highway speed

• One piece classic heel-and-toe shifter adds versatility and enhances the overall cruising experience.

• Clean, quiet belt drive system is extremely low maintenance and simplifies customization. The belt features "Aramid" cords for excellent strength and reduced stretching.

• Air Induction System (A.I.S.) reduces harmful CO and HC exhaust emissions.

• Numerous chromed engine parts reinforce this motorcycle's quality image.

Chassis and Suspension:

• Double cradle steel frame offers roomy ergonomics, great handling and a low seat height. This frame utilizes a 4-point rigid engine mounting system to optimize the overall rigidity balance for superior handling. The engine is a stressed member of the frame. Rake is 32 degrees. The engine is mounted low in the chassis to provide a low center of gravity for a light, easy handling feel.

• "Box section" steel swingarm compliments the frame.

• The V-Star 950 features one of the lowest seat heights in its class (675mm / 26.6"), making it very easy for most riders to place both feet flat on the ground, an important benefit for novice or shorter riders.

• The long (1685mm / 66") wheelbase provides very stable and precise handling at all speeds. Both of these benefits will help instil confidence in novice riders.

• "New Style Classic" body design concept is based on a single streamline running along the entire body surface. This stylish design highlights a new low, lean, and lighter image than conventional old style cruisers. The long, low design means spacious ergonomics with lots of leg room, which maximizes both rider and passenger comfort.

• Beefy 41mm front fork features stylish large-diameter brushed-finished fork covers. Wheel travel is 135mm (5.3") for a smooth, comfortable ride.

• Monocross style, single-shock, bottom link rear suspension centralizes mass for light, agile handling. The linkage system provides a rising rate or progressive effect that provides excellent compliance on small bumps then increases in firmness for large bumps.

• Spring preload adjustable rear shock is vertically mounted behind the engine and is tucked out of sight for that clean, classic "hardtail" look. Rear wheel travel is 110mm (4.3"). The 9 positions of spring preload adjustment allows the rider to tailor spring preload to suit rider weight, load and road conditions.

• Single, large 320mm front disc brake features a pin slide-type caliper with twin pistons for strong, confidence-inspiring stopping power.

• 298 mm rear disc brake is squeezed by single piston caliper mounted to the underside of the swingarm. This design not only helps to hide the caliper but also lowers the center of gravity for light handling.

• 1 inch diameter handlebars are easy to reach and enhance the riding position for excellent rider comfort. Chromed bar end weights reduce vibration for excellent rider comfort.

• 17 litre teardrop shaped fuel tank compliments the long, low "New Style Classic" body lines. The reserve portion of the tank is 3.7 litres.

• Separate rider and passenger seats offers excellent comfort and support for all day riding fun. Rider seat height is only 675mm or 26.6 inches off the ground. The front portion of the rider seat is narrow to make it even easier to touch the ground. The passenger portion of the seat can easily be removed if desired.

• Front and rear fenders are made of steel for easy customization and demonstrate the quality of build.

• Full-size, "floating-type" rider floorboards are roomy and comfortably positioned while also helping reduce vibration. There is a replaceable "scraper" area on the lower edge of the board.

• Lightweight 8-spoke cast aluminium wheels are fitted wide tubeless tires. These stylish wheels feature a "split" spoke design. Front wheel is 3.50 inches wide fitted with a 130/70x 18 bias tire, while the rear is 4.5 inches wide fitted with a 170/70x 16 bias tire.

• Stylish fuel tank mounted instrument features an analog speedometer, digital odometer, dual tripmeters, low fuel tripmeter, clock and low fuel warning light. The instrument illumination can adjusted to suit the rider's preference via the RHS switch gear.

• Handlebar switch gear allows the operator to change instrument meter functions via buttons on the RHS handlebar switch, thereby eliminating the need to take your hands off the bars to "tab through" the main instrument functions.

• 60/55 watt high intensity halogen headlight emphasizes the "New Style Classic" body styling. The headlight is adjustable up and down plus left and right.

• "New Style Classic" taillight design.

Additional Features:

• Industry-leading Star family fit and finish features rich, lustrous paint and extensive chrome accents creating a machine Low-maintenance, lightweight, compact, sealed battery ensures fuss-free, dependable starting.
• as stunning as it is powerful.
• Extra wide brushed aluminium front brake and clutch levers provide a quality feel.
• High output 460 watt generator
• Electric fuel pump
• Steering lock is integrated into the main ignition switch for extra convenience.
• Self-cancelling turn signals
• Excessive lean angle sensor will stop the engine in the event of a tip over
• Convenient under seat helmet holder
• Upper & lower belt covers help prevent debris from entering the belt and pulley areas
• Stylish clear signal lenses.
• Convenient pre-wired accessory plug for passing lamps inside the headlight shell

A slammed speedometer, under bar mounted mirrors and 26-inch seat height offer a low profile, while the peanut tank and big 16-inch wheels combine for a menacing look that could only come from Harley-Davidson.

• Evolution V-Twin powertrain with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI)
• Rubber-mounted powertrain to reduce vibratio
• 5-speed Transmission
• Chrome, shorty dual exhaust with slash-cut mufflers
• Forward foot controls
• Optional Harley-Davidson® Smart Security System with hands-free security fob

Classic Peanut Fuel Tank

First appearing on a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle back in 1948—and providing the inspiration for the Forty-Eight® model name—the small 2.1 gallon tapered peanut fuel tank holds strong today with its traditional styling and modern attitude. A low, powerful bulldog look that gives way for showcasing more engine, the peanut fuel tank is attitude and looks all balled up into one.

Hard Candy Custom Color (Optional)

New for 2013, Hard Candy Custom™ paint is a large metal flake finish that’s more than just paint job, it’s a shining declaration of independence—bright, bold and unique. The Sportster Forty-Eight® is available in Hard Candy Coloma Gold. Recalling the iconic rebel styling of ‘70s custom bikes, Hard Candy Custom™ paint marks another milestone in The Motor Company’s legacy of innovation. We start with several passes of 200 micron flake over a black base, then clear coat it, hand-lay the graphics, and apply the many layers of clear coat to allow the flake to shine through. It’s a painstaking process that delivers a premium custom look straight from the factory, so you can start flying your colors with no waiting or extra effort.

Slammed Handlebar, Speedo and Under Mount Mirrors

The slammed black drag-style handlebar with speedo and under mount mirrors adds to the stripped down, minimal look of the Forty-Eight® motorcycle. Inspired by the way hot rod pioneers used to slam their rides, the drag style handlebar is an old school garage feature that demands a forward, aggressive riding position.

Fat Front Wheel

A beefy front end with a tall, fat MT90 tire gives the Forty-Eight® model a grounding visual equal to that of a 1950 Mercury. Custom rubber reminiscent of the lead-sled culture. A dominating presence up front that provides a smooth ride and solid handling.

Clean Rear End Styling

When the look is fast and smooth, details count and clutter doesn’t make the cut. We carefully crafted the rear end with retro-styled Stop-Turn-Tail lights and a side-mounted license plate to leave the fender surface clean and uncluttered for an authentically raw, custom look. And while the lamps may look old-school, it's their new-school engineering that keeps things clean, packing stop, turn and running beams into each bullet.

Premium Paint

Up to two times thicker than the competition, custom quality paint comes standard on all Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. Clearcoat layering up to five mils deep. Bigger metal flakes. Unique effects in the pearl colors. Skimping simply is not in our vocabulary.

Evolution® Engine Heritage

The Evolution® engine—known in certain crowds as the Blockhead—was first bolted to the frame of a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle back in 1984. Born from legendary Shovelhead and Ironhead engines, the Evolution® engine broke new ground in displacement innovation while maintaining the hunger for power, durability and proven reliability that The Motor Company was built on.

Evolution® Engine Innovation

Air-cooled and durable as hell, the 1200cc Evolution® engine is yet another nod to the unwavering work ethic that drives advancements in motor technology at Harley-Davidson. Aluminum heads and cylinders lighten the load of the bike and improve air-cooling efficiency. Electronic fuel injection says goodbye to carburetors and boasts increased reliability and less routine maintenance. Bottom line: the rubber-mounted Evolution® engine runs hard and rides smooth for thousands of miles so you can just worry about taking in the freedom of the open road.

Pure Harley-Davidson Styling

Feast your eyes on the 1200cc Evolution® engine and there's no mistaking its roots. This is authentic Harley-Davidson style through and through with an attention to detail you won't find from any other motorcycle company. Black powder-coated cylinders and cylinder heads are topped off with chrome rocker covers, while chrome pushrods highlight the iconic V-Twin. It's a jewel machined out of metal. Pure. Dripping with power. From the classic edge of the cooling fins to the clean lines of cases and covers—the 1200c Evolution® engine makes an ironclad statement to holding on to what's right and staying true to what satisfies the rider.

H-D® Smart Security System (Optional)

The factory installed next-generation security system features a hands-free fob that automatically arms and disarms the vehicle electronic security functions as you approach and walk away from the bike. Stick the fob on your ignition key ring and let it do all the work. It's this attention to details and security that make Harley-Davidson® motorcycles unique.

Artfully Hidden Technology

Harley-Davidson leverages the latest in technology without compromising style and function. That means we hide electronics. The whole wiring harness is skillfully routed behind the jewels of the bike—the tank, engine and all the other eye-popping features you want to see. It's just another way The Motor Company goes the extra mile to give its bikes that premium, top-of-the-line fit and finish.

Intuitive Controls

Hand controls on a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle are incredibly intuitive. The turn signals are self-canceling and, based on the speed and angle of the motorcycle, they know how long to stay on. Engaging the controls quickly becomes second nature so you can focus less on turning off your signal and more on basking in the freedom of the ride.

Low Seat & Slammed Suspension

The combination of a lowered front and rear suspension together with a low solo seat—just 26 inches high—provides confidence for riders of all sizes and experience. A responsive ride for whipping through town or busting out onto the interstate.

Michelin® Scorcher™ Tires

New Michelin® Scorcher™ Tires provide the superior performance, sensational grip, impressive durability and excellent handling expected on a race-bred bike. The exclusive deep-cut tread design improves grip and water evacuation capability. Grip performance and durability is also enhanced by the tire's rubber compounds, which use the latest generation of Michelin synthetic polymers. Under the rear rubber, aramid belts are used to stabilize your ride, which helps inspire confidence in handling.

Tuned to Be Ridden

Harley-Davidson® motorcycles are different from any other bike out on the road. There's a balance to them. The steering, the maneuverability—it's all in concert. And each Harley-Davidson® model is tuned differently to create a unique riding experience for each individual no matter which bike they swing their leg over. Let's face it, we didn't get to where we are by being like everyone else.

Forward-Mounted Controls

With the custom forward-mounted controls on the Forty-Eight® model, you can kick back a little and stretch your legs for the ultimate cruise through town or across the state line. It's time to take in the open road the way you were meant to—on a two-wheeled machine that's built to outdo the rest.

2013 Harley-Davidson FXDB Dyna Street Bob Review

"Our focus for the Street Bob® model is always on street appeal," said Harley-Davidson Styling Manager, Tony Pink. "This bike is for the owner who would order a muscle car with the biggest motor and no radio. As part of this restyle, we cleaned off the rear fender, ditched the battery box trim, and bolted on a classic round air-cleaner cover. The goal is to create the elemental Big Twin that a Customer can define as his own. Then we selected an array of options for H-D1TM that allow the owner to take the Street Bob® [model] in many different stylistic directions."

The defining elements of the Street Bob® model are retained for 2013 - a solo seat, chopped rear fender, and mini ape-hanger handlebar give this motorcycle an unmistakable profile. New styling features include a black Twin Cam 96TM powertrain with highlighted details, blacked-out front end, chopped rear fender, a round air-cleaner, and new scallop graphics in a two-tone paint option.

New Black Out Styling

You demanded it and we heard you. We’ve re-imagined the Street Bob® motorcycle for 2013, stripping it back to its roots with a classic, essential bobber style and massive amounts of black finish: gloss black front end triple clamps, textured black console, blacked out powertrain with textured covers. It's an aggressive, unpolished street attitude that pulls no punches and delivers only what you need, nothing you don’t.

Hard Candy Custom™ Paint Color (Optional)

New for 2013, Hard Candy Custom™ paint is a large metal flake finish that’s more than just paint job, it’s a shining declaration of independence—bright, bold and unique. The Dyna® Street Bob® model is available in Hard Candy Big Red Flake (or, through H-D1™ Factory Customization, in Hard Candy Lucky Green Flake, Hard Candy Coloma Gold Flake, or Hard Candy Big Red Flake with Waterslide graphics.)

Mini "Ape-Hanger" Handlebar

Grab hold of the stainless steel mini ape-hanger handlebar and put your fists way into the wind. The style is pure post-war bobbers, and we keep it clean and minimalist by routing the wires inside the steel. And new for 2013, we've rubber-isolated the bars with separate risers and blacked out top triple clamps, so you can ride more comfortably, with less vibration, and can accessorize with less hassle.

Bobber Solo Seat

True to the old school bobber look, a slammed, 25.5-inch low solo seat drops you in nice and snug to the bike and close to the pavement beneath you. It's the ultimate bond with the road and your machine. Get the quintessential bobber style without sacrificing the comfort of the ride.

Blacked Out Rims & Large Front Wheel

Raw, gritty and no-nonsense—minimalist, yet premium in every detail—the Street Bob® motorcycle's overall blacked out styling includes black laced steel wheels and stainless steel spokes with an aggressive 19" wheel up front to lead your way out of the mundane. Blacked out like the Harley-Davidson® Twin Cam engine, these wheels make a bold statement and provide a smooth, true ride.

New Bobber Powertrain & Air Cover

As part of its back-to-basics 2013 restyle, we’ve refined the Street Bob® model's powertrain’s along more classic, minimal lines. Along with the retro-style air cleaner cover, stamped with The Motor Company Bar and Shield, this gives the engine an authentic old-iron soul and genuine Bobber presence.

New Blacked Out Console

A big part of the 2013 Street Bob® model’s raw look—and another refinement you asked for—this blacked-out, gas tank-mounted console delivers minimalist style and big functionality. The full-length console is textured-black and includes an integrated barrel-key ignition switch and LED indicator lights, electronic speedometer with gear/RPM indicator, tach, clock, trip-meter, and engine diagnostics.

Chopped Rear Fender

Lose the support covers and a good chunk of metal and you get another important feature of the bobber from yesteryear: the chopped rear fender. Stripped down clean, this fender offers just enough surface for low-profile taillights and a side mounted license plate bracket. Give other riders more tire to look at when you blow past them.

Stop-Turn-Tail Lights

Old school looks meet new-school engineering. Minimalist chrome retro-style bullet taillights combine functionality to work twice as hard—stop beams and running lights plus turn indicators in two low-profile rear lamps.

Fuel Tank Medallions

When it comes to motorcycles, there's one name that people will never mistake for another: Harley-Davidson. The 2013 Street Bob® model features newly designed cast fuel tank medallions with classic styling that oozes the iconic Harley-Davidson attitude. Consider it your badge of honor bolted on the side of the fuel tank so everyone can see exactly how you roll.

Personalized Paint Options

Basic black is bad to the bone but a little color can go a long way to creating a unique look. Add even more retro flair and Bobber attitude with Denim paint. Or take it to the next level of authentic Bobber styling with Big Blue Pearl and hand-laid Scallop graphics. And if you've got an eye for brilliance, add gleaming, 1970s custom-style metal flake shine with the new Hard Candy Custom™ paint option. Want to go even further with your custom? Check out the Street Bob® model's H-D1™ factory customization offerings and see how easy it can be to create your custom of one, straight from the factory.

Hand Finished Fuel Tank

All Harley-Davidson® fuel tanks are finished by hand—that's what makes them stand out from the competition. Their seamless design and unmatched style are unique among all motorcycles on the road. The tanks are one of the first and last things people notice when they lay their eyes on a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle—so we make it worth their time.

Premium Paint

Up to two times thicker than the competition, custom quality paint comes standard on all Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. Clearcoat layering up to five mils deep. Bigger metal flakes. Unique effects in the sunglo and pearl colors. Skimping simply is not in our vocabulary.

Step up to 103 Power with H-D1™

With the 2013 Street Bob® model a part of our H-D1™ Factory Customization program, you can easily personalize your bobber custom. Tell us how you want it and we'll build it for you, straight from the factory—including stepping up your engine to a Twin Cam 103™. With more stump-pulling torque, the Twin Cam 103™ delivers a performance punch you’ll definitely appreciate on the road, along with lower cruising rpm, for smoother riding, with less vibration and better highway fuel economy. So live life to the power of 103 on your Street Bob®, with H-D1™, only from Harley-Davidson.

Twin Cam 96™ Engine Heritage

The knowledge of what makes an engine truly move a rider runs deep at The Motor Company, and it was put to good use when we created the Twin Cam 96™ engine. We sweated bullets perfecting every cubic inch, pushing design and technology forward. And we did it all without compromising one bit of Harley-Davidson's unique styling. Evolved, yet carrying on the legacy of the Flathead, Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead, Evolution® and Twin Cam 88® engines that came before. The performance and durability are a direct result of the untold miles logged on the V-Twin since 1909, and the proud heritage that comes from a century's worth of commitment to life on two wheels.

Twin Cam 96™ Engine Innovation

Fire up the Twin Cam 96™ engine and feel the low-end torque unleashed. Thanks to the lightweight piston design, delivery of the added power is more refined than ever. Then put your foot on the shifter and feel how the engine and Six-Speed Cruise Drive® transmission were designed to work together. Six speeds. A strong driveline and strong internal parts. Low routine maintenance. And a low cruising rpm couldn't feel better.

Pure Blacked Out Styling

Feast your eyes on the Twin Cam 96™ engine and there's no mistaking its roots. From the classic edge of the cooling fins to the clean lines of cases and covers, this is authentic Harley-Davidson style through and through with an attention to detail you won't find from any other motorcycle company. The finish, newly designed for 2013 as part of the Street Bob model's re-imagined dark styling, features a blacked out powertrain, a gloss black battery cover and textured wrinkle-black rockers with highlighted fins. It's pure, minimal styling that makes an elemental statement about holding to what's right and staying true to what satisfies.

Six-Speed Cruise Drive®

You want a ride that rumbles—not begs for mercy—when you lean on it a little. The Six-Speed Cruise Drive® transmission provides smooth, quiet shifting and reduces engine speed on the highway, so you get a better match between engine turnover and road speed. It's a rare ride when a bike responds like this, and a low growl goes a long way when you're opening up the road ahead.

H-D® Smart Security System (Optional)

The factory-installed next-generation security system features a hands-free fob that automatically arms and disarms the vehicle electronic security functions as you approach and walk away from the bike. Stick the fob on your ignition key ring and let it do all the work. It's this attention to details and security that make Harley-Davidson® motorcycles unique. Offered as a part of the 'Security Package' (which includes Anti-Lock Brakes).

Anti-Lock Brakes (Optional)

The lightweight bodywork contributes considerably to overall performance by reducing weight, protecting the Testastretta Evoluzione engine's power output, and assisting the rider to effortlessly 'tuck in' from the wind stream and reduce drag to achieve maximum straight-line track speeds.

Brembo’s monobloc caliper - Ducati Superbikes have always been famous for their incredible, track-derived braking performance and the 848EVO is no exception. Now featuring radially mounted Brembo's powerful Monobloc calliper racing tachnology. The twin Monobloc callipers each have four 34 mm pistons that grip 320 mm discs to help generate planet-stopping braking while transmitting a precise “feel” at the brake lever. On the rear is a Brembo two-piston calliper and 245 mm disc.

Showa rear suspension - The rear is controlled by a fully adjustable Showa single shock.

Lightweight 5-spoke wheels - The lightweight front wheels used on all Ducati Superbike models substantially reduces the moment of inertia, enabling a faster change of direction and enhanced acceleration and braking performances. The 848EVO is equipped with Y-shaped, 5-spoke wheels by Enkei and are now mounted with state-of-the-art Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP 120/70 ZR17 front and 180/55 ZR17 rear tyres

Magnesium front sub-frame - Producing a front subframe in magnesium underlines the attention to weight-saving detail in the Ducati Superbike range. Its construction provides secure support for the headlamp, instruments and fairing, and the weight-saving around this high, forward position contributes considerably to overall 'feel' and control of the machine.

EQUIPMENT

Lighting - The horizontal twin headlamps, a signature Ducati style from the iconic 916, are modernised with the latest lighting technology. Two polyellipsoidal units light the way with a powerful beam while maintaining an aggressive look to the front of the machine in pure Ducati Superbike tradition. The rear light employs a specially designed strip of LEDs enhanced by a high diffusion lens shaped into the sleek lines of the tailpiece. The same LEDs are intensified for brake lights. The directional indicators also use the latest in LED technology for illumination. The frontal indicators are beautifully integrated into the rear view mirrors.

GP-derived instruments - This pure racing digital instrumentation originating from Ducati's MotoGP project has no switches or buttons to compromise its clean, minimalist lines. Instead, information additional to the default read-outs is managed from the left-hand handlebar-mounted switch gear, allowing the rider to scroll through and select from various menus. The display, which has a bright white LED back lighting, presents rpm and speed, with the former displayed across the screen in a progressive bar graph. Optionally, the rpm and speed can be displayed in numeric values. Additionally, it displays lap times, DTC level selected (if activated on 1198) time, air temperature, coolant temperature, battery voltage, two trips and a trip that automatically starts as the fuel system goes onto reserve. Warning lights illuminate to signify neutral, turn signals, high-beam, rev-limit, low oil pressure, fuel reserve, DTC intervention (if activated on 1198 S, 1198 S Corse and 1198 R Corse) and scheduled maintenance. The instrument display is also used as the control panels for the DDA (DDA kit supplied as standard on 1198 S, 1198 S Corse and 1198 R Corse) and DTC systems as well as listing lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.

Controls - 848EVO is equipped with adjustable levers that operate Brembo radial-type master cylinders with remote reservoirs. Add easy-to-use switchgear with stopwatch function and DTC and DDA management (where applicable) and it becomes clear that functionality plays a major role alongside performance.

Stopwatch - The digital display is programmed with a stopwatch function that, when enabled, can be triggered by using the high-beam flash button and each recorded time stored in a memory. After your journey or track session, the times or lap times can be recalled from the memory and scrolled through by using the instrumentation buttons on the left-hand switchgear.

DDA ready - The instrument display also doubles as a control panel for the activation of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. The bike has been built ‘system-ready’ for the data acquisition kit, which consists of special DDA software and a memory key that slots into a plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy new battery charger available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

Mirror extension kit - All Superbike mirrors come with an optional spacer kit enabling an extension of 30mm over the standard mirror stem length.

2012 Ducati 848 EVO Model Highlights

SUPERBIKE 848EVO

The 848EVO Testastretta Evoluzione engine

The 848EVO is powered by a liquid cooled, L-Twin, Desmodromic engine that produces 140hp (103kW) @ 10,500rpm and a high-accelerating 72.3lb-ft (10kgm) of torque @ 9,750rpm.

The 94mm x 61.2mm bore and stroke breathes through 4 valves per cylinder fed by revised inlet port shapes and racing-style elliptical throttle bodies, which have an equivalent diameter of 60mm. The EVO’s piston crown and combustion chamber shape improves burn efficiency, while the 13.2:1 compression ratio and performance-driven camshafts provide 13mm of valve-lift and 257° of inlet duration.

Electronically injected and ignited by Marelli, the super-efficient power unit then exhausts through a lightweight 2-1-2 system equipped with a catalytic converter and up-rated to twin lambda probes for smooth mapping and Euro3 conformity. Terminating in twin under-seat silencers, the system delivers that unmistakable signature sound of the Desmo 90° L-Twin.

The highly advanced 848 engine was the first Ducati Superbike to introduce vacuum die-cast crankcases, formed using Vacural® technology, a process that achieves a significant weight saving and ensures consistent wall thickness and increased strength.

Chassis

The 848EVO chassis and suspension are the result of a 'performance-first' priority approach to development, in which the goals are always to achieve lightweight with high strength and rigidity to manage the highpowered Testastretta Evoluzione engines. Developed in cooperation with Ducati Corse, the lightweight Trellis frame features 34mm main section tubes with a material thickness of 1.5mm.

Producing a front subframe in magnesium underlines the attention to weight-saving detail Its construction provides secure support for the headlamp, instruments and fairing, and the weight-saving around this high, forward position contributes considerably to overall 'feel' and control of the machine.

The dual construction technique used for the single-sided swingarm allows the main operational components to use individual aluminium castings so as to ensure strength around the pivot points, wheel hub and suspension links, while lightweight, fabricated aluminium sections are used to complete the construction into a single, beautifully engineered component. The 848EVO swingarm is then presented in a sophisticated black-anodised finish.

The lightweight front wheels used on all Ducati Superbike models substantially reduces the moment of inertia, enabling a faster change of direction and enhanced acceleration and braking performances. The 848EVO is equipped with Y-shaped, 5-spoke wheels finished in black and mounted with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP 120/70 ZR17 front and 180/55 ZR17 rear tyres.

The 848EVO features fully adjustable 43mm Showa forks with radial brake calliper mountings, which provide superior road holding and precise feedback. A control-enhancing steering damper maintains perfect frontend stability, inspiring supreme control and confidence alongside the increased power output.

The lightweight Trellis frame and single-sided swingarm enable a compact and weight-saving rear suspension linkage system, which features separate lower pick-up points for the push-rod and fully adjustable Showa single shock suspension unit. This 'tandem' design effectively reduces stress around the linkage pick-up area of the Trellis frame. The 848EVO Corse Special Edition raises the specification even higher with a fully adjustable Öhlins rear shock offering enhanced feel for performance-hungry sport riders.

Monobloc brakes

Ducati Superbikes have always been famous for their incredible, track-derived braking performance and the 848EVO is no exception. Featuring Brembo's powerful Monobloc calliper racing technology applied to 320mm discs, the EVO’s incredible braking capability is a result of Ducati’s continual quest for responsible performance.

Machined from a single piece of alloy, the callipers achieve a higher rigidity and resistance to distortion during extreme braking. The resulting increase in hydraulic efficiency not only delivers incredible braking power, but also provides an enhanced and precise 'feel' at the brake lever. The twin Monobloc callipers each have four 34mm pistons that grip 320mm discs to help generate planet-stopping braking.

The 848EVO Corse Special Edition takes that Monobloc braking experience to the next level with full Superbike-style 330mm front discs.

Aerodynamically shaped air ducts positioned just below the headlamps are precisely calculated to provide ample air delivery to the pressurised airbox.

The lightweight bodywork contributes considerably to overall performance by reducing weight, protecting the Testastretta Evoluzione engine's power output, and assisting the rider to effortlessly 'tuck in' from the wind stream and reduce drag to achieve maximum straight-line track speeds.

Instrumentation

This pure racing digital instrumentation originating from Ducati's MotoGP project has no switches or buttons to compromise its clean, minimalist lines. Instead, information additional to the default read-outs is managed from the left-hand handlebar-mounted switch gear, allowing the rider to scroll through and select from various menus.

The display, which has a bright white LED back lighting presents rpm and speed, with the former displayed across the screen in a progressive bar graph. Optionally, the rpm and speed can be displayed in numeric values. Warning lights illuminate to signify neutral, turn signals, high-beam, rev-limit, low oil pressure, fuel reserve, DTC intervention selected (if activated on the Corse Special Edition) and scheduled maintenance. The instrument display is also used as the control panels for the DDA (available as an accessory by Ducati Performance), DTC and DQS systems as well as listing lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.

Superbike lights and indicators

The horizontal twin headlamps are modernised interpretations of the iconic 916, restyled and updated with the latest lighting technology.

The frontal indicators are beautifully integrated into the rear view mirrors, which come with an optional spacer kit enabling an extension of 30mm over the standard mirror stem length.
