2013 Ducati Monster 1100 EVO 20th Anniversary Review

Celebrating 20 years of iconic Monster style

The Monster family reaches a milestone 20 years of production in 2013 and Ducati celebrates the iconic naked motorcycle with special 20th Anniversary editions of its latest 696, 796 and 1100EVO models.

Standing proudly alongside the exclusive Monster Diesel, this bold range of lifestyle motorcycles is engineered with high attention to user-friendly and safety-conscious detail ensuring the Monster's cult status remains as authentic as ever.

With stylish Trellis frames, excellent chassis components and torque-laden, Desmodromic engines giving that unmistakable sound and character, the entry-level 696 and premium mid-range 796 Monsters provide a desirable way to enter the world of Ducati.

The Monster 1100EVO underlines the Monster family's defining concepts of functionality, style and sport with an evolution of the flagship model. Taking its name from the Desmodue Evoluzione engine, which delivers a Monster milestone 100hp, the 1100EVO sports the latest generation exhaust system, Marzocchi front suspension, refined tail-end, bold sport-style graphics and the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) consisting of ABS and 4-level Ducati Traction Control (DTC).

The 20th Anniversary editions of the Monster 696, 796 and 1100EVO are dressed in special celebratory colour schemes and revised colour finishes for frames, brake callipers, master-cylinders and key chassis components in addition to a many other details including design refinements applied to rearview mirrors and seat covering.

Ducati and fashion brand, Diesel, join forces to create the Monster Diesel, a brave combination of "iconic naked motorcycle" and "urban military chic", designed to celebrate authentic Italian style at its purest.

With Ducati's Monster 1100EVO providing the canvas for the new creation, Diesel's founder Renzo Rosso and the Ducati Design Centre guided stylists to a military inspired theme, expressing the core values of the partnership and realising an avant garde choice for connoisseurs.

While all three models are available in red, the 696 is also offered in dark stealth or stone white and the 796 in arctic white silk or diamond black silk. The 1100EVO in red is enhanced with a white stripe and the sophisticated diamond black scheme with a grey stripe, while the Monster Diesel's exclusive "Diesel Brave Green matte" livery delivers a rugged military vehicle feel. The Monster 696, 796 and 1100EVO 20th Anniversary editions are finished in Ducati red, with bronze frames. Ensuring an attractive colour option for everyone, the entire family is further customizable with the innovative and unique Monster Art program.

DUCATI MONSTER 20th ANNIVERSARY EDITIONS

20 years of iconic style

First shown at the Cologne motorcycle show back in 1992, the innovative Ducati Monster design went into production in 1993, creating the modern "naked" segment and becoming the Ducati's top selling model and world-famous icon of design. Over quarter of million Monsters later, the Italian manufacturer now celebrates the monumental success of the model with a special edition Monster 696 20th Anniversary, Monster 796 20th Anniversary and Monster 1100EVO 20th Anniversary.

The Anniversary edition's striking livery of red with bronze frame is further complemented with gold-coloured brake callipers and front disc carriers and, on 1100EVO, gold-coloured brake and clutch master cylinders.

While the headlamp support has a chrome finish, the triple clamp, fork bottoms and swingarms are all finished in grey.

Further model-defining features are champagne coloured fork bodies and a custom finished seat with Monster '93-style fabric recalling some of the features of the model's first introduction 20 years ago. The retro "Ducati 1986" font is used on the single-seat cover and for the retro-style "Ducati" on the fuel tank which, unlike standard 696, 796 and 1100EVO, also has the centre panel of the tank finished in red to recreate an authentic feeling of the original Monster. The Anniversary model is also equipped with the
original Monster-style mirrors.

20th Anniversary

90s style wing mirrors
The celebration of Monster's twentieth anniversary is all about the details. The Monster 20th Anniversary models feature the original wing mirrors, with their unmistakable 90s look, the same ones that were fitted of the first Monster.

20th Anniversary
The Monster has revolutionized the world of motorcycling, becoming more than just a simple motorcycle: it's a way of life, it's what makes its riders feel unique. Its customised versions owned by 250,000 enthusiasts have made it a true and proper icon that transcends time. Twenty years after its birth, Ducati celebrates this symbol of style and personality, presenting a unique model: the very first one. An unmistakable style coupled with latest-generation performance: here's the Monster 20th Anniversary, the motorcycle that continues to write history.

Original livery
The Monster 20th Anniversary models have the same colours with which the Monster 900 was presented in Cologne in the autumn of 1992: the tank and seat cover rigorously in Ducati Red are matched with the bronze-coloured frame; the vintage style is completed by the champagne-coloured fork sleeves, by the golden Brembo braking system and by the chrome finish of the headlight. The many light-grey details of the engine and chassis are also a tribute to the first version of the Monster.

Logo Ducati 1986
The Ducati Monster 20th Anniversary series is enhanced by the original style of the Ducati logo introduced in 1986, which appears in clear view on the tank, along with the name Monster, it too with a markedly vintage taste.

The Ultimate Monster
The Monster 1100EVO perfectly mixes high engine power, a Ducati Safety Pack (ABS + DTC) contained of advanced electronics, a new sports concept and superior riding pleasure to refine the original Monster formula, which makes it an icon of the naked segment.

DUCATI MONSTER 1100EVO

Monster evolution
The Monster 1100EVO further enhances the Monster family's defining concepts of functionality, style and sport with an evolution of the flagship model. Taking its name from the Desmodue Evoluzione engine, which delivers a Monster milestone 100hp, the 1100EVO rolls out with the latest generation exhaust system, comfort-enhanced ergonomics, Marzocchi front suspension and refined tail-end in addition to the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) of ABS brake system and 4-level Ducati Traction Control (DTC). The Monster 1100EVO was the first ever Monster to be equipped with DTC.

Ducati's application of the "EVO" treatment now runs deep throughout the Ducati range and its introduction to the ever-improving Monster family was inevitable. It completes a stylish family of lifestyle motorcycles with high attention to user-friendly and safety-conscious detail, while ensuring the Monster's cult status as a design icon of hand-built, naked motorcycles remains as authentic as ever.

The ultimate Monster
The Monster 1100EVO took everything great about the new generation Monster family and added an evolution of upgrades that took the Monster concept to the next level. The Desmodue Evoluzione engine is Ducati's first 2-valve motor to hit the 100hp mark and its super-smooth power delivery is sure to delight riders the world over. Add to that the latest generation, power-enhancing exhaust system with low level cannon-style, vertically stacked silencers that leave the tail-end looking sharp and minimalistic and the
introduction of DSP, consisting of the user-friendly, 4-level DTC that supports the ABS system in enhanced rider control, and it's plain to see that this really is an "evolution" model. But it doesn't end there.

Quality by design
Part of Ducati's approach to Quality improvement is to blend owner feed-back into the design process of new models, and the Monster 1100EVO is an iconic example. Ergonomics were totally revised with the a reshaped seat and bar-risers for the rider and a rear sub-frame ready to accept the confidence-inspiring Ducati Performance grab-rail kit for the passenger, whose comfort is further enhanced with a low-slung, rerouted exhaust system. Add to these enhancements rubber-mounted rear indicators and a compact
number plate holder with LED lighting, and it is clear that Ducati listened to every last detail.

The 'less-is-more' philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati's continuous pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles and with the EVO's dry weight at 169kg (373lb) it represents the lightest, most compact bike in its category.

The Monster 1100EVO is the result of constant evolution in design and technology. The powerful and breathtaking top-of-the-range model boasts attractive ergonomics and presents pure style and charisma, while preserving the essence of the original naked bike concept. The EVO design perfectly balances sports performance, stunning looks and safety-conscious riding pleasure and its seductive lines are the product of a Ducati philosophy where form and function combine to create the quintessential naked bike.

Ducati Safety Pack (DSP)
The Monster 1100EVO was the first model to introduce the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), configured to enhance rider control on Ducati's lifestyle models. DSP consists of the ultra-dependable Brembo-Bosch ABS braking system and user-friendly 4-level Ducati Traction Control (DTC). Both systems are supplied as original equipment and complement each other to provide a major contribution to safer motorcycling.

Accessible from the left-hand switchgear and displayed on the digital instrumentation, the DTC system offers a choice of four levels, each one programmed with an increasing level of interaction graded from one to four. While level four administers a confidence-building, high level of interaction from the system by activating upon the slightest amount of wheel-spin, level one offers a lesser amount of intervention for more competent, sport-oriented riders. When the level is selected and DTC activated, the level is displayed on the instrumentation.

Front and rear wheel sensors then compare speed differential to sense when rear traction is being broken (wheel-spin) and DTC decides the best combination of two different types of instant electronic adjustment, calculated with data supplied from multiple sources. The first 'soft' stage of system interaction is executed by high speed software that makes instant electronic adjustment to the ignition timing, administering varying amounts of ignition retardation to reduce the engine's torque.

If the DTC software detects that the first 'soft' stage of system interaction is inadequate to control the wheelspin, it continues to administer ignition retardation and, in addition, instructs the engine ECU to initiate a pattern of constantly increasing injection cuts until, if necessary, full injection cut. During all stages of interaction, the two warning lights - normally used to signify the over-rev limiter - illuminate to indicate that DTC is being applied. As soon as the system recognises the gradual return of equal wheel speeds, it incrementally re-establishes normal power delivery. This seamless interaction is key to the super-smooth operation of the system and represents a considerable increase in performance safety during mid-corner acceleration.

The Brembo-Bosch ABS developed by Ducati combines with top quality brake system components to deliver outstanding performance and confident control. Designed to reduce the risk of wheel-lock under heavy braking or when braking in low grip conditions, the system reads wheel speed data from phonic wheel sensors to detect potential wheel lock. If the wheel speed differential falls below a specific safety limit, the control unit immediately reduces the brake system pressure to the appropriate calliper to avoid wheel lock.

The pressure reduction on each individual braking circuit is activated by electronically controlled valves, which then close as the wheel speed differential moves away from a locking scenario.

The Desmodue 1100 Evoluzione
The lightweight, L-Twin stands at the pinnacle of more than three decades of Desmo air-cooled development and its torquey power delivery has excited riders worldwide. Its latest evolution combined with the Monster's airbox capacity and latest exhaust configuration marks a milestone for Ducati's 2-valve engine as the first to reach 100hp.

The 1100cc Desmodue Evoluzione power unit continues to use a bore and stroke of 98 x 71.5mm, but its long list of refinements have boosted its power to 100hp (73.5kW) at 7500rpm with 76lb-ft (10.5kgm) of torque at 6000rpm giving it smooth power delivery from city-like low rpm to exhilarating open road performance at redline.

The 1100's crankcases are vacuum cast using Vacural® technology, a process that achieves significant weight saving and ensures consistent wall thickness and increased strength. In addition to the magnesium alternator cover, the 1100 has a lightweight crankshaft assembly, using an 848-style Superbike flywheel and weight-saving rare-earth magnets for the generator assembly.

Power gains came not only from the crankshaft assembly, but also from an evolution of the top-end of the Desmodue power unit. The cylinder head, which introduced enhanced lubrication and cooling performance, also has a special inlet port shape for optimum flow and a combustion chamber shaped for improved burn efficiency. This improved efficiency included an 11.3:1 compression ration and the change to a single spark per cylinder ignition now managed by high-speed Siemens electronics.

Ensuring a sufficient feed and maximum volumetric efficiency to the high compression set-up are equally high valve lift values, safely enabled by Ducati's unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valves to follow the steep closure profiles of the cam lobes if they were relying upon normal valve springs. With the Desmo system, the valves are closed mechanically with the same accuracy as they are opened, enabling steep cam profiles and
radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati power unit including the race-winning Superbike and Desmosedici GP engines.

The Monster 1100EVO uses a slipper-clutch specially designed for the "wet" clutches of larger capacity engines. It features an oil bath system with 'slipper' function and super-light feel at the lever. Its design uses a progressive self-servo mechanism that presses the plates together when under drive from the engine, enabling the reduction of the clutch spring rates. This results in a much lighter clutch lever at the handlebar, ideal in traffic or long journeys. When the drive force is reversed (over-run), the same mechanism reduces the pressure on the clutch plates, enabling them to provide a race-like 'slipper' action which reduces the destabilizing effect of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting and provides a much smoother feeling when closing the throttle or down-shifting under normal riding conditions. An additional cush-drive damper mechanism also smoothes the repeated transition from drive to over-run during stop-start traffic. The clutch and alternator covers are finished in a sophisticated looking carbon grey.

EVO exhaust
The latest generation exhaust system follows a revised 2-1-2 routing to ensure the EVO's power-enhancing and efficient power delivery and dedicates a lambda probe to each header to ensure precise fueling. While the stylish cannon-style, vertically stacked silencers carry catalytic converters to provide Euro 3 conformity, an electronically controlled mid-section valve optimises exhaust pressures throughout the rev-range. The revised positioning of the aluminium silencers leaves the rear-end of the Monster looking sharp and minimalistic and ensures uncompromised passenger comfort.

1100 chassis
Exceptional handling, combined with 75.9lb-ft (10.5kgm) of torque from the Desmo engine, results in a pure, adrenalin-filled ride and at just 169kg (373lb), the Monster 1100EVO is the lightest bike in its class. The lightweight aluminium sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the single-sided swingarm and aluminium footrest hangers, which are rider and passenger separated. The passenger footpeg hangers are designed to attach directly to the rear sub-frame, which also accepts the passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available from Ducati Performance. The footpegs and grab-rail kit provide increased passenger riding comfort and further enhance the EVO's stylish lines.

Fully adjustable 43mm Marzocchi forks and Sachs rising-rate rear suspension unit, with adjustable spring pre-load and return damping, offer sufficient personalisation to suit all riding styles and provide the perfect 'feel'. The steeply angled rear unit compresses in a movement non-linear to the rear swingarm radius, which achieves progressive characteristics, enables easy access to the spring pre-load and rebound damping adjuster, and eliminates the weight of any rocker-arm mechanism.

The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster 1100EVO a "pure sports" look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is made in chill-cast aluminium, achieving optimum mechanical characteristics while reducing final weight for improved handling.

Stylish and lightweight aluminium alloy 10-spoke wheels reduce unsprung weight and improve agility and are fitted with a 120/70ZR tyre at the front and a 180/55ZR at the rear, both Pirelli Diablo Rosso II. The result is lightweight, precise steering that is extremely responsive at all speeds while giving the vehicle exceptional stability. The sports character of the bike is further accentuated by aluminium tapered handlebars.

The power of the Monster 1100EVO can rely upon a best-in-category braking system that provides excellent, precise and controllable braking performance. The impressive Brembo system features radial pumps with adjustable levers feeding four-piston radial callipers which grip twin 320mm discs. The rear brake uses a 2-piston calliper operating on a 245mm disc. As an integral component of the Ducati Safety Pack, ABS comes as standard equipment on the Monster 1100EVO.

EVO colours
The Monster 1100EVO is available in two colour schemes of red - with a racing-style white stripe along the centre of the front mudguard, tank and single-seat cover - and red Trellis frame or black with both stripe and frame in racing-grey. Both Monster colours use sporty looking black wheels with short red pin-strip and can be further personalised from a choice of additional liveries available within the Monster Art program.

Even the new 10 spoke rims with a design carried over from Streetfighter and 1198 want to stress the evolved sports look of the new Monster. The sport-oriented separated passenger pegs and the dynamic design of the license plate holder contribute to minimalistic the bikes side profile. A wonderful touch of sportiness, evocative of the racing environment, is the Ducati Corse Stripe which proudly signs the fender, the fuel tank and the single seat cover.

Minimum weight, maximum fun
The Monster 1100EVO offers a greater enhanced driving pleasure. The exceptional handling comes from a further reduced weight (169 kg dry weight), combined with the new 100 hp engine Desmodue Evoluzione, the most powerful 2-valve Ducati ever. Every single component has been created to satisfy a Ducati rider’s needs and provide unrivalled agility and handling. That is why Ducati engineers, designers and testers have aimed for the best possible set-up and the Monster is able to ensure the best handling of all naked bikes.

Less is Monster
The 'less-is-more' philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati's never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more 'pared down' than their predecessors. Every single component has been redesigned and redeveloped so now more than ever, form follows function. With any details detracting from the Monster concept being eliminated, 'less-is-more' also means 'less-is-Monster'. Less weight plus more torque equals fun-filled riding.

Monster Story
In 1992 Ducati unveiled a new prototype that was to become an icon. Ducati's creation awed the crowds and the world's media of that year's Cologne International Motorcycle show. The 900 Monster was a motorcycle that created a truly new niche - dramatically styled, minimalist in stature yet bristling with innovative engineering solutions. The Monster's radical styling has also provided the inspiration for an entire after-market sector specialising in hot-rod parts for this legendary machine. For this reason, rarely do you see two Monsters the same. This radical and refreshing design departure also influenced other manufacturers but, as the old adage states: imitation is the highest form of flattery... The Monster is characterised by a long and successful history, by its introduction during the years of numerous cylinders and uncountable colour options, but above all by a constant technological evolution that this year brings us to the birth of the last version: the Monster 1100EVO, "The Ultimate Monster".

Engine

Power & torque curves
The Monster 1100EVO delivers 100CV (73,5kW) @ 7500rpm and 10,5kgm (103Nm) @ 6000rpm Compared with the previous Monster 1100, the new engine data performance ensures a more exciting riding experience at high revs and a super-smoother power delivery thanks to a more linear torque curve.

Desmodue Evoluzione
The Monster 1100EVO is powered by the Desmodue Evoluzione engine which is the first two-valve Ducati to hit the 100 hp. Compared with the previous 1100 cc Twin cylinder air-cooled L Desmodromic, this new engine gives an even greater adrenalin rush thanks to the superior power level at high revs while a more linear torque curve ensures a super-smoother power delivery. The 1100 cc Twin Desmodromic has been tuned in order to increase both volumetric and combustion efficiency. The inlet ports and the combustion chamber shape have been redesigned, while the new camshafts have an extreme profile to provide an increased valve lift. The pistons are new too and feature an high compression profile. To ensure high standards of reliability the head cooling system has been revised with improved lubrication to enhance the cooling performance.

Wet clutch
The Monster 1100EVO features a new wet clutch which ensures quiet operation and long life. In addition, the progressive self-servo mechanism reduces the lever effort at the handlebar and makes the Monster even more practical in traffic. The Monster 1100EVO wet clutch works with a race-like ‘slipper’ system which reduces the destabilizing effect of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting, and compared with other wet clutch used so far by Ducati, features an additional cush-drive damper mechanism which smoothes the repeated transition from drive to over-run during stop-start traffic.

Vacural® crankcases
The two-valve engine on the Monster 1100EVO features a crankcase which significantly reduces overall engine weight. They are produced using the same innovative Vacural® technology that Ducati previously applied only to Supersport models.
This method of production relies on vacuum die-casting, which improves the quality of the casting by avoiding porosity, air pockets and oxidation. This enables greater dimensional accuracy and higher ductility for the aluminium alloy. Ducati designers have drawn upon the benefits of this innovative process, redefining the conformation and thickness of the sides on the new crankcase using finite element simulations (FEM) and tests, which resulted in achieving the required reliability standards as well as attaining a weight reduction of the crankcase.

Exhaust system
The Monster 1100EVO features a completely revised 2-1-2 routing exhaust system with two aggressive low level cannon-style, vertically stacked silencers placed on the right side, which give off in fullness the famous sound of the Twin-cylinder Ducati engine. The new exhaust system, equipped with tow Lambda probes and an electronically controlled valve, is a crucial component in achieving the excellent torque and engine power, and a fundamental style element used by the Ducati designers to emphasize the superior performance of the new Monster 1100EVO.

Chassis

Marzocchi forks
The 43mm upside down fully adjustable Marzocchi forks offer sufficient personalisation to suit all riding styles and provide that perfect ‘feel’. The suspension set-up developed by Ducati testers is a perfect balance between handling and driving pleasure under all conditions.

Lightweight 10-spoke wheels
The Monster 1100EVO is equipped with lightweight aluminum alloy wheels with the new 10-spoke design. The new wheels reduce unsprung weight and contributes to increase the agility and, with their sporty look, to stress the superior performance. The front wheel (3,50 x 17) is equipped with a 120/70ZR tire, the rear (5,50 x 17) with a 180/55ZR tire. The result is a light steering, reliable and sincere in their responses at all speeds, giving the vehicle exceptional stability.

Single-sided swingarm
The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster a ‘tough’ look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is chill-cast using aluminium in its most noble form. Gravity cast and heat treated, the component achieves the best mechanical characteristics as well as reduced final weight for improved handling.

Sachs rear suspension
The Sachs rising-rate rear suspension unit offers adjustable spring pre-load and return damping.
Using the proven ‘cantilever' system, the steeply angled rear unit compresses in a movement non-linear to the rear swingarm radius, thus achieving a progressive action. This enables easy access to the spring pre-load and rebound damping adjuster, while eliminating the weight of the rocker-arm mechanism. The suspension set-up developed by the Ducati testers is the perfect balance of handling and driving pleasure for all conditions.

Monster Trellis
An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of the Monster. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the chassis design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity. A separate, all aluminium sub-frame saves weight and adds a pleasing continuity with the aluminium footrest hangers and matte finished swingarm.

Ergonomics
With its slim waist and wide handlebars, the new Monster is the ideal bike for any riding style, in the midst of city traffic and in the winding curves. With a total steering angle of 64 degrees, an extremely intuitive and ergonomic handle position, a tapered and deeply sculpted fuel tank, the Monster offers the rider a comfortable and safe control of the vehicle at all times. The Monster 1100EVO further improves comfort quality with a comfort-enhancing new seat embellished with red stitching and 20 mm higher bar-risers. The Monster 1100EVO also features a rear sub-frame ready to support the confidence-inspiring Ducati Performance grab-rail kit for the passenger. The suspension set-up developed by Ducati testers is the perfect balance of handling and driving pleasure for all conditions.

Lightweight construction
The ‘less-is-more’ philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati’s never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more ‘pared down’ than their predecessors. The Monster 1100EVO goes further. The weight saving solutions used by the Desmodue Evoluzione engine construction, such as the alternator cover made in magnesium and the flywheel lightened of the Ducati 848EVO, in combination with a lighter exhaust, reduce to 169kg the total dry weight (-2kg compared to the Monster 1100).

Brembo brakes
The power and charisma of the new Monster 1100EVO can rely upon a best-in-category braking system that provides excellent, precise and controllable braking performance. The vigorous Brembo system is the direct result of Ducati Corse racing experience, featuring radial pumps with adjustable levers feeding four-piston radial callipers which grip twin 320 mm discs. The rear brake uses a 2-piston calliper operating on a 245mm disc. Ducati has further improved this powerful braking system, adding as standard content the ABS system which allows the best braking under any riding situation.

Equipment

Ducati Safety Pack (DSP)
In developing the Monster 1100EVO attention has been paid not only to performance enhancement, but also in ensuring both rider and passenger a high level of safety in all driving conditions. This second goal has been achieved by equipping the Ducati Monster 1100EVO with the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), which comes as standard along with the ABS system and the famous Ducati Traction Control (DTC). This is the first time it has been available on a Monster.

DTC
The Monster 1100EVO is the first two valve engine model to be equipped with the state of the art Ducati Traction Control system (DTC). The Monster 1100EVO DTC system uses the same software logic developed and used by Ducati Corse for their winning bikes in MotoGP and Superbike Championships. The system offers a choice of four profiles, each one programmed with a wheel-spin tolerance matched to progressive riding levels of skill graded from one to four. While level four administers a confidence-building, high level of interaction from the system by activating upon the slightest amount of wheel-spin, level one offers a much higher tolerance and, therefore, much less intervention for highly competent riders. The Monster 1100EVO comes standard with the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) which includes DTC + ABS.

ABS
The ABS system provides a major contribution towards active safety as it's designed to reduce the risk of wheel-lock under panic braking or when braking in low grip conditions. The Monster 1100EVO comes standard with the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) and includes DTC + ABS.

LED taillight
An LED rear light unit satisfies the minimalist, weight-saving design ethos found throughout the Monster 696. The specially designed strip of LED are enhanced by a special diffuser lens to deliver outstanding light clarity and incredible longevity.
For the Monster 1100EVO, even the license plate light uses LED technology.

Headlight
The triple-parabola headlight on the Monster utilises the latest optical technology and advanced construction techniques to provide an incredibly compact lighting package. In spite of its compact size, the headlight throws a broad and deep beam to provide excellent visibility and make night riding safer. Viewed from the side, its discrete silhouette mimics the radical shape of the fuel tank.

Empowering Controls
The Monster 1100EVO features radial pumps with adjustable levers on beautifully shaped aluminium tapered handlebars

DDA ready
The instrument display also doubles as a control panel for the activation of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. The bike has been built ‘system-ready’ for the data acquisition kit, which consists of special DDA software and a memory key that slots into a plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy new battery charger available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

Stopwatch
The digital display is programmed with a stopwatch function that, when enabled, can be triggered by using the high-beam flash button and each recorded time stored in a memory. After your journey or track session, the times or lap times can be recalled from the memory and scrolled through by using the instrumentation buttons on the left-hand switchgear.

2013 Ducati Monster 1100 EVO 20th Anniversary Features and Benefits
MONSTER FAMILY FEATURES

Monster frame
An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of all Monsters. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the frame design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity and enables a useful 64 degrees of lock-to-lock steering travel.

The lightweight aluminium sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the footrest hangers and swingarm, and is designed to accept a passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. The kit further enhances passenger ride comfort without compromising the Monster's stylish lines.

Monster ABS
The 2013 Monster family offers all 696 and 796 models with optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), while the 1100EVO and Monster Diesel has ABS fitted as standard equipment.

Monster instrumentation
Looking clean and minimalist in true Monster style, the brightly illuminated display provides all essential data by default, and even more by scrolling with the left-hand switchgear. Data includes speed, revs, time, scheduled maintenance, oil temperature, ABS status (when applicable), DTC status (1100EVO and Monster Diesel only) and battery voltage, while warning lights illuminate for oil pressure, fuel reserve, turn indicators, high beam and neutral selection. In addition, the instruments present a reserve fuel trip, immobiliser status and automatic light-off function after 60 seconds with the key on as well as a memory to store lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.

For the Monster 1100EVO and Monster Diesel, the display also doubles as a control panel for the 4-level Ducati Traction Control system included in the Ducati Safety Package (DSP), in addition to the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. All Monsters are built "system-ready" for the data acquisition kit, which consists of a special DDA software and memory key that slots into USB style plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy "battery maintainer" available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

Monster Desmo
The incredible valve performances of the Desmodue engine are made possible because of Ducati's unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valves to follow the steep closure profiles of the cam lobes if they were relying upon normal valve springs. With the Desmo system, the valves are closed mechanically with the same accuracy as they are opened, enabling steep cam profiles and radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati power unit including the race-winning Superbike and Desmosedici GP engines.

Monster quality
Having more experience with twin-cylinder high performance engines than any other manufacturer, the aircooled L-Twin remains central to Ducati's philosophy of motorcycling. This experience, plus constant investment in quality by design, advanced materials and engineering techniques has enabled a distance between service intervals of 7,500 miles (12,000km) making Ducati ownership even more enjoyable.

2013 Ducati Monster 796 20th Anniversary Review

20 years of iconic style

First shown at the Cologne motorcycle show back in 1992, the innovative Ducati Monster design went into production in 1993, creating the modern "naked" segment and becoming the Ducati's top selling model and world-famous icon of design. Over quarter of million Monsters later, the Italian manufacturer now celebrates the monumental success of the model with a special edition Monster 696 20th Anniversary, Monster 796 20th Anniversary 20th Anniversary and Monster 1100EVO 20th Anniversary.

2013 Ducati Monster 796 20th Anniversary Key Features

Concept

Engine

796 Desmodue

The 796 engine is a completely brand new, lightweight Desmodue power unit designed to provide the torquey, smooth and enjoyable character famous of all Desmodromic L-Twins.

APTC clutch

The APTC ‘wet’ clutch gives a ‘slipper’ type action that prevents destabilizing of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting and also gives the extra benefit of a super-light feel at the lever, a great benefit in stop-start city traffic or during longer journeys. The 21-plate oil-bath clutch (11 friction and 10 steel) represents a power-enhancing weight reduction over the ‘dry’ system as well as having a quieter operation and requiring less maintenance.

Lightweight crankcases

The new crankcases hug the gearbox internals much closer to create a smaller and more compact outer profile and achieve considerable weight savings over previous cases.

Exhaust system

Providing a deep and rich exhaust tone within current noise and emissions regulations is no mean feat, but the Monster definitely provides the L-Twin sound famous of Ducati. Its bold, high-level twin mufflers also make a striking style statement.
The exhaust system on Monster 796 20th Anniversary has one Lambda probe dedicated to each cylinder, enabling precise fuelling for a smoother power delivery as well as complying with current emission regulations.

Power & torque curves

The Monster 796 20th Anniversary produces 84hp (64kW)@ 8250rpm of power and a torque to 58lb-ft (78Nm) @ 6250rpm.

Crankshaft

The crankshaft assembly uses a lightweight 848-type flywheel and has a 66mm stroke instead of the 696’s 57.2mm.

Chassis

Monster Trellis

An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of the Monster. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the chassis design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity. A separate, all aluminium sub-frame saves weight and adds a pleasing continuity with the aluminium footrest hangers and matte finished swingarm.

Lightweight 5-spoke wheels

The extremely lightweight aluminium alloy Y-shaped, 5-spoke wheels reduce unsprung weight and improve agility. The 3.50x17 front wheel is fitted with a 120/70ZR tyre while the rear 5.50x17 wheel has a 180/55ZR. The result is lightweight, precise steering that is extremely responsive at all speeds while giving the vehicle exceptional stability.

Single-sided swingarm

The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster a ‘tough' look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is chill-cast using aluminium in its most noble form. Gravity cast and heat treated, the component achieves the best mechanical characteristics as well as reduced final weight for improved handling.

Marzocchi forks

Outstanding grip and unbeatable riding comfort are ensured by a 43 mm Marzocchi upside down stanchion fork, which provides 120 mm of suspension travel.

Lightweight construction

Every carefully selected component of the Monster 696 has a net benefit to the overall light weight of the machine. The dry weight of 161kgs (355lb) has dramatic effects on not just manoeuvrability and ease of use, but also by contributing directly to increased performance, braking and acceleration.

Equipment

Monster Style

Refined and sophisticated, the Monster 796 20th Anniversary is proud to show its unmistakable style as the ‘Italian ambassador' in the world of motorcycling.
The large diameter tube construction flows into the cast aluminium rear sub-frame which matches the matte black rear swingarm and footrest hangers.

The 17" wheels in the five ‘Y-shape' mount a stylish pin-stripe for 60° of the circumference of the rim which creates a full circle of red when in motion.

The bright white illuminated display, the stylish red stitching of the new seat, the italian flag and the new Ducati logo on the front mudguard complete the clean and minimalist style of this new urban icon.

M796 ABS

The Ducati Monster 796 20th Anniversary is available with ABS (anti-lock braking system).
Unlike the majority of motorcycle ABS set-ups, this system has the advantage of ensuring a more natural braking ‘feel' for the rider.
The Monster 796 20th Anniversary ABS is equipped with ABS, the single seat cover and the neat micro-bikini fairing.

Empowering Controls

The Monster 796 20th Anniversary has enhanced comfort and control with 20mm higher bar-risers gripping sturdy tapered section aluminium handlebars. Integral type Brembo master cylinders are used for both the clutch and brake systems and maintain a clean handlebar arrangement for the rider. They are fitted with user-friendly 4-point adjustable levers that provide easy-to-reach control for all hand sizes and the APTC clutch offers a super-light lever action ideal for use in the city.

2013 Ducati Monster 796 20th Anniversary Features and Benefits

2012 Ducati Streetfighter S Review, Key Features and Benefits

CONCEPT

Streetfighter design - The Ducati Streetfighter is equipped with everything that made the Superbike a legend: Awesome L-Twin muscle with brutal, big-bore torque, thoroughbred chassis technology, beautiful single-sided swingarm, planet-stopping Monobloc brakes and pure, sophisticated class.

While the tank and seat shapes leave no doubt as to the Streetfighter’s roots, it is the upright and commanding riding position that really starts to shape the character of this ultimate naked. New, minimalistic controls, instrumentation and headlight design leave the front looking clean and mean, while twin-stacked right-side mufflers at the rear leave the tail-end high and sharp. No other Ducati has ever achieved such an aggressive stance while providing a comfortable, empowering, controllable and enjoyable ride.

Streetfighter culture - The Streetfighter culture was born on the backstreets of Northern Europe during the late 70s and 80s. If the Café racer movement had taken traditional bikes and transformed them to establish out-and-out sportbikes, then Streetfighters were definitely anti-establishment. They evolved by removing the fairings from sport bikes, fitting higher bars and customising to create high-performance, over-the-top nakeds.

Ducati’s Streetfighter project was inevitable. The passion to build the most successful Superbikes ever, mixed with the desire to create iconic, naked motorcycles was a rush of adrenaline just waiting to happen. Who else would create a bike for out-and-out purists to celebrate naked power in all its forms? A bike with muscle-engine performance, aggressive chassis engineering and intelligent electronics all laid bare to appreciate, respect and enjoy? Ducati build bikes for enthusiasts – for bikers who appreciate the details that come together to make an awesome bike.

S philosophy - Ducati’s ‘S’ treatment of the Streetfighter pushes its tech spec to the red line. Öhlins suspension front and rear and lightweight Marchesini forged wheels stack up serious credibility, while the front fender and cam belt covers in super-light carbon fibre help reduce the dry weight to an extreme 167kg (368lb).

But the ‘S’ sophistication doesn’t end there. Awesome street-going Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Data Analysis are standard issue, making it clear that the Streetfighter S is not all muscle – it’s intelligent too.

ENGINE

Magnesium alloy covers - Attention to weight reduction is further underlined with both cam covers and clutch outer cover cast in manesium alloy.

Vacural® crankcases - The Vacural® casting process used to make the Streetfighter crankcases ensures consistent and precise wall thickness and increased strength from absolute material purity while reducing weight an incredible 3kg (6.5lb) compared to those of the 1098 Superbike engine.

Power & torque curves - Producing a ballistic 85lb-ft (11.7kgm) of torque and 155hp (114kW), the Streetfighter’s awesome 1098 power house fears nothing of the naked sports competition. The L-Twin, Testastretta Evoluzione engine gives both the best power-to-weight and the best torque-to-weight ratios in its class.

Testastretta Evoluzione - The world-beating 1098 Testastretta Evoluzione needs little introduction. Debuting in 2007, it went on to form the basis of a motor that powered Ducati to Superstock and Superbike World titles that left the competition stunned. Now, its massive bore, short stroke and incredible torque powers Ducati’s most extreme naked and the results are equally as stunning.

Crankshaft - The streetfighter's lightweight crankshaft assembly operates a highly ‘over-square’ bore and stroke with huge 104mm pistons powering through short 64.7mm strokes.

High-effieciency cooling - The Streetfighter’s power house is protected by twin coolant radiators, carefully curved in pure naked style for optimum performance and stunning with visual effect. The upper radiator is assisted by lightweight, high flow electric fan assemblies while the lower sits in the front of the belly pan, which also houses a highly efficient oil heat exchanger.

Elliptical throttle bodies - The Streetfighter engine is fed by MotoGP-derived elliptical throttle bodies which are equivalent to a diameter of 63.9mm. Representing a 30% increase in air flow over conventional throttle bodies, the elliptical shape contributes considerable a power increase. The Ducati 1098 engine was the first in the range to introduce this MotoGP technology for street use.

Exhaust system - The massive 2-1-2 exhaust system is made from weight-saving 1mm thick steel and flows from 58mm to 63.5mm diameter pipes. The system uses two lambda probes to ensure precise fuel mapping for optimum performance and an electronic valve in the mid-section to achieve a wide spread of power.

The cannon-style, vertically stacked, brushed steel mufflers deliver the famous Ducati L-Twin sound synonymous with raw, Desmo power.

CHASSIS

Brembo Monobloc brakes - The Streetfighter S uses Brembo’s powerful Monobloc calliper race technology. Machined from a single piece of alloy, the callipers achieve higher rigidity and resistance to distortion during extreme braking. The result not only delivers planet-stopping brake power, but also gives an enhanced and precise ‘feel’ at the brake lever. The twin Monobloc callipers each have four 34mm pistons that grip huge 330mm discs to achieve their spectacular performance. The weight of the discs has been kept to a minimum by using racing-style narrow braking surfaces.

Single-sided swingarm - At the rear, the all-new single-sided swingarm, finished in black, is a high-grade aluminium cast that has been lengthened by 35 mm with respect to the Superbike, thus taking the overall wheelbase to 1475 mm for even more uncompromising acceleration.

Fighter frame - The purpose-built Trellis frame uses 25.6° of rake compared with the Superbike’s 24.5° to ensure a well-planted front-end.

Marchesini 5-spoke wheels - The Streetfighter S reduces weight even further by using Y-shaped, 5-spoke wheels by Marchesini, forged and then machined in lightweight aluminium. The Streetfighter S wheels are finished in bronze.

Ohlins rear suspension - Taking care of the rear of the ‘S’ is a single high-spec Öhlins unit fully adjustable in spring preload with full adjustment and highly engineered control of compression and rebound damping. The unit is also fitted with a ride enhancing top-out spring which helps maintain rear tyre contact under extreme conditions.

Ohlins forks - The Streetfighter S pushes the spec way up with 43mm Superbike-spec Öhlins forks that have sliders treated in low-friction TiN. Fully adjustable in spring preload and precisely adjustable in compression and rebound damping, they ensure ‘S’ feeling and finesse when the fight gets rough.

EQUIPMENT

Stopwatch - The digital display is programmed with a stopwatch function that, when enabled, can be triggered by using the high-beam flash button and each recorded time stored in a memory. After your journey or track session, the times or lap times can be recalled from the memory and scrolled through by using the instrumentation buttons on the left-hand switchgear.

DDA - The Ducati Data Analyser (DDA), which includes PC software, a USB-ready data retrieval card and instructions, enables you to review and analyse your performance and that of the bike's, and to make comparisons between various channels of information. The system records numerous channels of data including throttle opening (A), vehicle speed (B), engine rpm (C), engine temperature (D), distance travelled (E), laps and lap times. It also automatically calculates engine rpm and vehicle speed data, enabling it to display gear selection (F) as an additional channel of information. An additional channel of information is now dedicated to recording the DTC index (G) which can then be viewed as a graphic trace and indicates the amount of DTC interaction during wheel-spin. (Subject to model) At the end of a ride or track session, up to 4mb of data can be downloaded ready to compare, analyse and get an inside view of the performance of both you and the bike.

Lighting - The aggressive looking headlight is the ‘face’ of the Streetfighter and it leaves little doubt as to its character. While the main lighting source and multi-reflector design provides powerful illumination to cut through the night, its two evil eye strips of LED positioning lights give a striking and unmistakable identity to the bike.

Keeping design matters clean and stylish, the directional indicators remain unobtrusive with clear lenses and coloured bulbs, while the rear light is integral to the shape of the tailpiece, providing unobscured illumination while maintaining the smooth and elegant look to the high and sharp rear-end.

Fighter controls - The handlebars are gripped by beautifully shaped clamps that flow sleekly into the bar-risers. Symmetrically mounted, remote brake and clutch reservoirs are small, low and compact and feed slim, radial master-cylinders by Brembo to complete the clean and uncluttered controls arrangement.

Minimalist switchgear - The switchgear presents minimalism at its best. The slim-line bodies house easy-to-use switches and buttons and feature a unique weapons-like ‘trigger catch’ that slides down to cover the starter button when activating the kill-switch.

Compact instruments - The Streetfighter’s instrumentation blends into the aggressive line of the headlight. Information additional to the default read-outs is managed from the left-hand handlebar-mounted switch gear, allowing the rider to scroll through and select from various menus.

The display presents rpm and speed, with the former displayed across the screen in a progressive bar graph. Additionally, the instruments display lap times, DTC status and level selected (if activated on Streetfighter S) time, air temperature, coolant temperature, battery voltage, two trips and a trip that automatically starts as the fuel system goes onto reserve.

Warning lights illuminate to signify neutral, turn signals, high beam, rev-limit, low oil pressure, fuel reserve, DTC intervention (if activated on Streetfighter S) and scheduled maintenance.

The instrument display is also used as the control panels for the DDA and DTC systems as well as listing lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.

Carbon fibre - Carbon fibre front fender and cam belt covers not only shave additional weight, they also contrast superbly against the bronze finish of the frame.

DTC - Accessible from the left-hand switchgear and displayed on the digital instrumentation, Ducati Traction Control (DTC) offers a choice of eight profiles, or ‘sensitivity levels’, each one programmed with a wheel-spin tolerance matched to progressive riding levels of skill, graded from one to eight.

While level eight administers a confidence-building, high level of interaction from the system by activating upon the slightest amount of wheel-spin, level one offers a much higher tolerance, resulting in less intervention for highly competent riders.

Once the level is selected and DTC activated, both are displayed on the instrumentation. The system then analyses data sent from front and rear wheel speed sensors to detect wheel-spin. Should the system recognise wheel-spin above a certain threshold, the DTC ECU instantly evaluates the many possible wheel-spin scenarios before administering two types of interaction in varying amounts.

DTC is able to sense the exact use that the bike is being put to. From slow mid-corner acceleration with considerable vehicle inclination to high speed corner exits while almost upright, DTC is intelligent enough to react according to each and every situation. It’s even smart enough to not intervene if you decide to perform a burnout or a wheelie.

The first ‘soft’ stage of system interaction is executed by high speed software that instantly makes electronic adjustment to the ignition by administering varying amounts of retardation to reduce the engine’s torque output.

During this initial stage of DTC interaction, both outer warning lights on the instrumentation – normally used to signify over-rev – illuminate to signify that DTC is being applied.

If the DTC software detects that the first ‘soft’ stage of system interaction is inadequate to control the wheel-spin, it continues to administer ignition retardation and instructs the engine ECU to initiate a pattern of constantly increasing injection cuts until, if necessary, full injection cut. During this second stage of system interaction, both outer and central warning lights fully illuminate to signify that DTC has also initiated injection cuts.

After either stage one (ignition retardation) or stage two (pattern of injection cuts or full cut), the system incrementally returns to the original ignition and injection mapping as the wheel speeds approach equalisation. This carefully programmed return to full power delivery is the real key to DTC’s smooth and efficient operation.

In developing its World Championship-winning traction control system for road use, Ducati continue to demonstrate their strategy of transferring technologies from their race bikes into the production environment, and show how solutions developed for performance on the track really can be applied to enhance safety on the road.

2012 Ducati Streetfighter S Model Highlights

Confident contender – Supreme fighter

2012 sees the excellent new Streetfighter 848 take its place alongside the awesome firepower of the Streetfighter S to broaden the stylish and exciting, high-performance naked family.

The Streetfighter 848 delivers pure motorcycle enjoyment with the sophisticated combination of a brand new and brilliantly engineered 848 Testastretta 11° engine and the enhanced geometry of a frame that ensures optimum agility with confidence-inspiring “feel”. With user-friendliness now enriched by a smooth and flexible power delivery, revised ergonomics and DTC, Ducati’s unique fighter style is set to create more excitement than ever.

The Streetfighter S takes its 155hp 1098 Superbike soul and mixes fighter attitude with naked sophistication to create a cocktail of Desmo adrenaline. Stripped to the bare essentials, its race technology, skeletal 368lb (167kg) styling, and 85lb-ft (11.7kgm) of torque takes Ducati’s big naked concept to the very top of the fighter food chain.

The Ducati Streetfighter S scored a round one knock-out when it entered the ring for the first time at the Milan show back in November 2008. Its supreme elegance stole the ‘Most Beautiful Bike’ award and raised the bar for extreme nakeds. Its asphalt-ripping reputation became the desire of sport naked connoisseurs throughout the world and the Streetfighter 848 now widens that desire with everyday accessibility. The new 848 fighter is dressed in red with a red frame for Ducati traditionalists, while yellow makes a comeback and the stunning dark stealth scheme underlines the Streetfighter’s aggressive image, both with frames finished in racing black. The Streetfighter S comes to the fight in Ducati red and the brand new for 2012 “race titanium matte”. Both schemes have red frames and black wheels.

Streetfighter reborn

The Streetfighter culture was born on the backstreets of Northern Europe during the late 70s and 80s. Ducati took that concept and applied their own Italian sophistication to a stunning, factory-prepared Streetfighter. The Ducati Streetfighter is equipped with everything that made the Superbike a legend: Awesome L-Twin muscle with brutal, big-bore torque, thoroughbred chassis technology, beautiful single-sided swingarm, racebred
brakes and pure, sophisticated class.

While the tank and seat shapes leave no doubt as to the Streetfighter’s roots, it is the upright and commanding riding position that really starts to shape the character of this ultimate naked. Minimalistic controls, instrumentation and headlight design leave the front looking clean and mean, while twin-stacked right-side mufflers at the rear leave the tail-end high and sharp. No other Ducati has ever achieved such an aggressive stance while providing a comfortable, empowering, controllable and enjoyable ride.

Add the awesome street-going Ducati Traction Control as standard equipment and Ducati Data Analysisready electronics and it’s clear that the Streetfighter perfectly balances the essential DNA of an exciting naked motorcycle with the latest race-derived electronic technology.

Ducati passion

Ducati’s original Streetfighter project was inevitable. Ducati build bikes for enthusiasts – for bikers who appreciate the
details that come together to make an awesome bike, for perfectionists who instantly recognise excellence when they see it.

Ducati motorcycles are not just a means of transport, they are the realisation of dreams that set their riders apart from the rest of the world. They are an extension of character and the ultimate personal statement. The Streetfighter is built with pure Ducati passion and it’s ready to impress.

Naked Ducati detail

More attention to detail than ever before went into creating the Ducati Streetfighter. Repositioning many of the components usually hidden by bodywork and continuing to keep them out of sight was a major challenge for the design and engineering teams, but they pulled it off with impressive results. Add details such as the perfectly formed passenger seat cover, a rear hugger fitted as standard equipment and the pre-minimalised licence plate holder, and it’s plain to see that Ducati have gone that extra step to achieve the highest level of finish.

STREETFIGHTER FAMILY FEATURES

Taking control

The Streetfighter 848 and Streetfighter S riding positions are now even more empowering, with 20mm higher handlebars enhancing the overall ergonomic triangle and, for the 848, 10mm wider foot-pegs improving foot positioning. This continuous study on seat, footpeg and handlebar relationship has maximised comfort without losing the desired feeling of an extreme naked Ducati.

Showing attention to detail typical of all new Ducatis, the handlebars are gripped by beautifully shaped clamps that flow sleekly into the bar-risers. Even the switchgear presents minimalism at its best. The slimline bodies house easy-to-use switches and buttons and feature a unique weapons-like ‘trigger catch’ that slides down to cover the starter button when activating the kill-switch. Symmetrically mounted, remote brake and clutch reservoirs are small, low and compact and feed slim, radial master-cylinders with adjustable levers by Brembo to complete the clean and uncluttered controls arrangement.

The Streetfighter’s instrumentation continues that same clean look with a compact shape that blends into the aggressive line of the headlight. Information additional to the default read-outs is managed from the lefthand handlebar-mounted switch gear, allowing the rider to scroll through and select from various menus. The display presents rpm and speed, with the former displayed across the screen in a progressive bar graph. Additionally, the instruments display DTC status and level selected, lap times, time, air temperature, coolant temperature, battery voltage, two trips and a trip that automatically starts as the fuel system goes onto reserve. Warning lights illuminate to signify neutral, turn signals, high beam, rev-limit, low oil pressure, fuel reserve, DTC intervention and scheduled maintenance.

The instrument display can also be used to manage Ducati Traction Control settings, list lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch and additionally as a control panel for the activation of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance for the Streetfighter 848 and supplied as standard equipment on the Streetfighter S. It consists of a special DDA software and memory key that slots into a plug under the seat, which also doubles as the connection for a handy battery charger also available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

Intelligent muscle

The Streetfighter S was Ducati’s first ever naked sportbike to be fitted with the awesome Ducati Traction Control (DTC) system and now the Streetfighter 848 inherits the same full eight-level DTC as standard equipment. In developing its World Championship-winning traction control system for road use, Ducati continue to demonstrate their strategy of transferring technologies from their race bikes into the production environment, and show how solutions developed for performance on the track really can be applied to
enhance safety on the road.

Accessible from the left-hand switchgear and displayed on the digital instrumentation, the system offers a choice of eight profiles, or ‘sensitivity levels’, each one programmed with a wheel-spin tolerance matched to progressive riding levels of skill, graded from one to eight. While level eight administers a confidence-building, high level of interaction from the system by activating upon the slightest amount of wheel-spin, level one offers a much higher tolerance, resulting in less intervention for highly competent riders. Once the level is selected and DTC activated, both are displayed on the Streetfighter’s instrumentation. The system then analyses data sent from front and rear wheel speed sensors to detect wheel-spin. Should the system recognise wheel-spin above a certain threshold, the DTC ECU instantly evaluates the many possible wheel-spin scenarios before administering two types of interaction in varying amounts.

DTC is able to sense the exact use that the Streetfighter is being put to. From slow mid-corner acceleration with considerable vehicle inclination to high speed corner exits while almost upright, DTC is intelligent enough to react according to each and every situation. It’s even smart enough not to intervene during a burnout or a wheelie.

The first ‘soft’ stage of system interaction is executed by high speed software that instantly makes electronic adjustment to the ignition by administering varying amounts of retardation to reduce the engine’s torque output. During this initial stage of DTC interaction, both outer warning lights on the Streetfighter instruments – normally used to signify over-rev – illuminate to signify that DTC is being applied.

If the DTC software detects that the first ‘soft’ stage of system interaction is inadequate to control the wheelspin, it continues to administer ignition retardation and instructs the engine ECU to initiate a pattern of constantly increasing injection cuts until, if necessary, full injection cut.

Exhaust system

The stylish Streetfighter 2-1-2 exhaust system is made from weight-saving 1mm thick steel and flows from 58mm to 63.5mm diameter pipes. The system uses two lambda probes to ensure precise fuel mapping for optimum performance and an electronic valve in the mid-section to achieve a wide spread of power. The cannon-style, vertically stacked mufflers sport a brushed steel for the Streetfighter 848 and black brushed steel for the Streetfighter S, both delivering the famous Ducati L-Twin sound synonymous with raw, Desmo power.

Single-sided swingarm

At the rear-end of both Streetfighters is a brand new, black-finished, single-sided swingarm beautifully cast in aluminium. 35mm longer than the Superbike it brings the total wheelbase to 1,475mm (58in) and ensures the Streetfighter’s acceleration is never compromised.

Lighting

The aggressive looking headlight is the ‘face’ of the Streetfighter and it leaves little doubt as to its character. While the main lighting source and multi-reflector design provides powerful illumination to cut through the night, its two evil eye strips of LED positioning lights give a striking and unmistakable identity to the bike. Preserving the clean and stylish design, the directional indicators remain unobtrusive with clear lenses and coloured bulbs, while the rear light is integral to the shape of the tailpiece, providing unobscured illumination while maintaining the smooth and elegant look to the high and sharp rear-end.

2012 DUCATI STREETFIGHTER S

Power and precision

Ducati’s ‘S’ treatment of the Streetfighter pushes its tech spec to the red line. Öhlins suspension front and rear and lightweight Marchesini forged wheels stack up serious credibility, while the front fender and cam belt covers in super-light carbon fibre help reduce the dry weight to an extreme 167kg (368lb). The true Ducati spirit is captured with a powerful Desmodromic L-Twin 1098 “Testastretta Evoluzione” engine producing 155hp with an incredibly wide spread of power thanks to 85lb-ft (11.7kgm) of torque.

The Streetfighter’s power and precision is further maximised by weighing in at just 368lb (167kg) and further benefits from technology derived directly from Ducati’s MotoGP and Superbike projects. Ducati Traction Control and Data Analysis, racing-style braking system, fully adjustable suspension and forged wheels all come as standard equipment on the ‘S’ to complete the battle-ready package.

1098 power

The world-beating 1098 Testastretta Evoluzione needs little introduction. Debuting in 2007, it went on to form the basis of a motor that powered Ducati to Superstock and Superbike World titles and now its incredible torque powers Ducati’s most extreme naked and the results are mind-blowing. Producing a ballistic 85lb-ft (11.7kgm) of torque and 155hp (114kW), the Streetfighter’s awesome 1098 engine fears nothing of the naked sports competition. The L-Twin, Testastretta Evoluzione engine gives both the best power-to-weight and the best torque-to-weight ratios in its class.

Using the Testastretta narrow valve angle, super-straight intake ducts and specially shaped combustion chambers, the Desmodromic motor continues to breathe through MotoGP-derived elliptical throttle bodies and four large diameter valves per cylinder to achieve its incredible spread of torque.

A high performance six-speed box and racing-style dry clutch makes sure the transmission package delivers 155hp as efficiently as possible. Engine surface features include enhanced detailing on the cam belt covers as well as a new black finish for the magnesium dry clutch cover and main outer casings and carbon-grey finish for the crankcases

The Streetfighter’s power is protected by twin coolant radiators, carefully curved in pure naked style for optimum performance and stunning with visual effect. The upper radiator is assisted by lightweight, high flow electric fan assemblies while the lower sits in the front of the belly pan, which also houses a highly efficient oil heat exchanger.

S-spec precision

At a class-leading 167kg (368lb) dry weight, the Streetfighter S also comes to the fight with the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class. The purpose-built Trellis frame, which uses 25.6° of rake compared with the Superbike’s 24.5°, ensures a well-planted front-end, while a fully cast aluminium single-sided swingarm at the rear is new for 2012. The rake, longer wheelbase and cross-mounted steering damper ensure stability even under the extreme acceleration of Ducati’s incredible L-Twin torque.

The Streetfighter S pushes the spec way up with 43mm Superbike-spec Öhlins forks that have sliders treated in low-friction TiN. Fully adjustable in spring preload and precisely adjustable in compression and rebound damping, they ensure ‘S’ feeling and finesse when the fight gets rough.

Taking care of the rear of the ‘S’ is a single high-spec Öhlins unit fully adjustable in spring preload with full adjustment and highly engineered control of compression and rebound damping. The unit is also fitted with a ride enhancing top-out spring which helps maintain rear tire contact under extreme conditions. Important attention to performance detail is inherited from its Superbike bloodline with Streetfighter S having rear rideheight adjusters that allow fine correction after setting personalised spring preload.

Part of the weight saving of the Streetfighter S over the 848 is down to the incredible Y-shaped, 5-spoke wheels by Marchesini, forged and then machined in lightweight aluminium. Reducing the unsprung weight for enhanced performance, the wheels are finished in black, and roll into 2012 fitted with the new Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tires.

The Streetfighter S uses Brembo’s powerful Monobloc calliper race technology. The weight of the discs has been kept to a minimum by using racingstyle narrow braking surfaces.

Streetfighter S colours

The Streetfighter S continues to be dressed in Ducati red and now introduces the stunning “race titanium matte” into the colour range, with both schemes using red frames and black wheels with red pin-striping.
