2013 Brutale 800 Review

A motorcycle capable of satisfying the most demanding of motorcycle enthusiasts.

Brutale three-cylinder means handling, extreme agility, and absolute ease of use. Now with the new engine power and torque comparable to a 1.000cc, and with a weight of only 167 kg, the 800 Brutale offers an unique power to weight ratio. Aside from the new engine, the Brutale 800 offers a new adjustable suspension allowing the riders complete personalisation.

A dependable advanced electronics package unique within this category: MVICS (Motor & Vehicle Integrated Control System), the integrated management system of the vehicle, includes the first Full Ride by Wire with multi-map and integrated traction control. Offering optimised delivery at all engine speeds, maximum engine efficiency in terms of fuel consumption, and of course the opportunity to select different engine characteristics, choosing from the four available maps: three pre-sets, one personalised. Traction control also ensures safety and performance on any road or track surface, allowing the driver to concentrate entirely on riding. The three-cylinder engine, which debuted on the supersport F3 675, forms the basis for the technological progress in its class, thanks to exclusive technical solutions such as the counter-rotating crankshaft, used in MotoGP, but never before seen on a production bike. The frame performance is guaranteed, thanks to MV Agusta’ s unique mixed structure: the front section of steel tube trellis combined with two light aluminium alloy plates, and a sculpted single-arm rear suspension.

2013 Brutale 800 Features and Benefits

The characteristics
In detail, the main features of MV Agusta Brutale 800 are:
• three-cylinder in-line engine with counter-rotating crankshaft
• Technology MVICS (Motor & Vehicle Integrated Control System)
• Traction control adjustable on 8 levels
• Frame structure mixed steel trellis and aluminium plates for high torsional rigidity
• Single-sided swingarm with adjustable rear shock absorber
• Upside down adjustable 43mm front fork
• Racing radial front callipers

The design
MV Agusta Brutale 800 is distinctive at first glance. A perfect combination of aesthetics, functionality, design and ergonomics. Form and substance. Unique in its kind, this three-cylinder is aligned with the standards of excellence of the Brutale 675, yet remains distinctive with new graphics and further detail enhancements. The overall compactness is visually impressive, with the mechanical components dominating; the three-cylinder engine is almost completely exposed to view, embraced by the distinctive frame and compact exhaust system. The silencer is modelled in such a way as to ensure maximum capacity and efficiency while remaining perfectly integrated. The tailpiece is essential yet elegant. Even the headlight characterises the design, by combining the original elements and stylistic features of the Brutale range. The distinctive three element exhaust pipe remains another key visual component of MV Agusta Brutale.

The engine
The new three-cylinder engine 800 has a stroke of 54.3 mm and delivers power and torque of 125 hp at 11,600 revs / min limiter at 13,000 rpm. The maximum torque is also significant touching 81 NM at 8600 rpm., The power and torque curves are strengthened and increased ensuring prompt throttle response and a generous delivery across the entire rev range. This level of performance, associated with a dry weight of 167 kg, put the Brutale 800 at the top of the category "naked" setting the new benchmark.
With F3 675 and Brutale 675 the new Brutale 800 shares most of the components. and fundamental technical choices: first, the counter-rotating crankshaft, previously used only in MotoGP is able to offer the best balance while driving, reducing inertia when changing direction and thus increasing the manoeuvrability of the vehicle.
The shell moulded crankcase employs a "closed deck” with integrated bores and features integrated circuits for both oil and water, with internal pump unit location. This reduces component numbers and offers visual cleanliness to the engine exterior. The final transmission ratio is increased, by virtue of superior performance and through the mounting of a sprocket with two teeth less.

The electronics
Brutale 675 boasts the most advanced electronic management within its category. In its succession the Brutale 800 also excels by applying advanced race technology to mass production. The system MVICS (Motor & Vehicle Integrated Control System) ensures the integrated control of the vehicle and the engine: This allows combining management of the three cylinders with the traction control, to achieve high performance with safety. Technological innovation is epitomised by the use of Full Ride By Wire. The electronic control of the throttle body, which together with the mapping for injection, and ignition optimises the air-fuel mixture at all engine speeds of delivery, maximising available power and torque as a function on request from the rider. Compared to the traditional mechanical throttle, the Full Ride By Wire allows you to untie completely the rotation of the accelerator and throttle openings, leaving the task to electronics to achieve the optimum solution offering improved efficiency and a response exceeding the expectations of the rider. Brutale 800 system uses a multimap, with three preset modes and one fully customisable so you can choose the most appropriate delivery to meet specific conditions. The integration of MVICS includes traction control on eight levels, adjustable in seconds and visible on the digital dashboard intervening throttle, ignition advance and injection.

The frame
Handling, traction, ease of use and performance: The objectives of the project were achieved by focusing on the chassis with a mixed structure. An unmistakable trademark of MV Agusta, consisting of the front section steel tube trellis and two aluminium alloy plates, fulcrum point for the long singlesided swingarm, designed to ensure the most efficient transmission of power to the asphalt.

The suspensions
Improved performance through increased levels of control and variability: The MV Agusta Brutale 800 is fitted with an upside down fork and shock absorber with hydraulic response customisable. The upside down fork 43 mm in diameter, characterised by the excellent fluidity, with an excursion of 125 mm and is adjustable in compression, rebound and spring preload. The rear shock absorber provides 119 mm stroke, adjustable in compression, rebound and spring preload. Brutale 800, therefore, adds to the versatility of the Brutale 675 with increased suspension regulation that further enhance riding dynamics.

The brakes
Brutale 800 offers a braking system of the highest quality utilising a pair of front 320 mm diameter discs, with Brembo four-piston (32 mm diameter) radial callipers and also at the rear a high performance twin-piston (34 mm diameter) Brembo calliper, matched to a 220 mm disc.

2012 MV Agusta F4R Review

The new 4 cylinder inline with radial valves is the pulsing heart of the MV Agusta F4 R. The thermodynamics have been completely redesigned, starting from the new low inertia crankshaft which makes it possible to use a super over-square bore and stroke ratio. In this way, the MV F4 R is capable of reaching rpm worthy of a pure racing motorcycle. The engine capacity of 998cc has been obtained by using a bore of 79 mm and a stroke of only 50.9 mm. In this way it is possible to achieve an extremely high 13700 rpm rev limit while at the same time lowering the linear velocity of the piston from 24.9 m/s to 23 m/s improving reliability.

In order to reach the stratospheric homologated power of 195.2 hp (against the 201 hp of the super powerful RR version) at 13000 rpm, every component was thoroughly engineered. The cylinder head uses completely new ports and employs larger valves both on the inlet and exhaust. For the first time on a mass production motorcycle, all the valves are made of titanium, allowing the weight of these to be reduced regardless of the increase in diameter (from 28.6 to 31.8 mm for exhaust and from 24.6 to 26 mm for the exhaust). The engine “breathes” in a more efficient way thanks to the use of a new 4-2-1-4 primary section of the exhaust system. In addition to assuring optimized engine efficiency, this new exhaust system offers an absolutely unique sound that is even more captivating then in previous versions. The fuel system employs 4 throttle bodies with a 49mm diameter and double fuel injectors per cylinder coupled with the unique MV Agusta TSS (Torque Shift System) variable intake runners.

The new F4 R, already on sale at official dealers, is available in 2 colours: red/grey and white/medium grey, at a price of 18,800 € including tax in Italy

2012 MV Agusta F4R Features and Benefits

The new engine of the MV Agusta F4 R was designed with the scope of reducing the internal friction to a minimum: the transmission’s new primary gear ratio allowed a drastic reduction in rpm of both generator and water pump, thereby limiting the absorbed power. This extraordinary engine utilizes the unique features that have become trademarks to MV Agusta including a removable 6-speed gearbox and a slipper clutch which assures precise control even during the most violent braking manoeuvres. The electronic management system has been continuously evolved, the traction control employs a new algorithm and maintains the two rider selectable engine maps, all of which are now comfortably adjustable by means of the new control situated on the left handlebar.

The new MV Agusta F4 R remains, naturally, faithful to the structural tradition of mixing a steel tubular trellis to cast aluminium side-plates. The steering head angle is set at 23.5°, perfect for providing control, manoeuvrability, and stability. Also confirmed is the exceptional rear single-sided swingarm, a real engineering jewel that weighs only 5 kg, a record for this type of element.

The MV F4 R retains its notoriety for excellence in the area of suspension. The Marzocchi upside down forks, with 50 mm stanchions, is derived directly from the units used in competition, they are adjustable in spring preload as well as the hydraulic extension and compression. The forged ultra-light front axle carrier is also especially made for the F4 R and uses a rapid release system for the wheel, reminiscent of the first F4, the legendary Serie Oro that adopted this same technical solution. The rear Sachs shock absorber is equipped with a nitrogen reservoir (separated and integrated within the body) and is adjustable in extension, compression and spring preload. The shock linkage allows the ride height to be adjusted depending on the desired setup, rider preferences to further tune the bike to specific riding conditions and tracks.

The Brembo front brake system, with “monoblock” radial calipers is, without a doubt, the best system for motorcycles currently on the market, coupled to a master cylinder with integrated reservoir made specifically to demanding MV specifications.

The 320 mm diameter floating double front discs use an ultra light flange which are 5 mm thick to reduce inertia forces and non suspended masses. The rear brake system is made exclusively for MV with a stainless steel 220 mm diameter disc and 4 piston calliper.

2013 Yamaha Raider Review

Instant Attitude Adjustment.

If you want totally custom but would rather ride than wrench, have a look at the 2013 Yamaha Raider by Star Motorcycles. It truly is the ultimate marriage of cruiser styling and total performance. Its 113 cubic inch fuel injected V-Twin engine takes a back seat to no V-Twin when it comes to power and reliablilty. And the rest of the chopper inspired 2013 Raider is pure Star quality, designed and engineered by the world's best bike builders.

When the engineers at Yamaha set out to produce a true custom machine, the easy part was the styling and attention to detail.

The trick was to combine "chopper inspired" styling with a chassis that would offer superior handling. The engineers at Yamaha were not willing to compromise. The Raider had to deliver great handling and excellent ride quality. Discover the eye catching blacked out styling details and the all round incredible performance of the Raider.

2013 Yamaha Raider Key Features

US MPG Fuel Consumption: 42 mpg; Fuel Consumption ± 18kpl/51mpg(Imp)

Fuel injected 1854cc V-twin with "Assist & Slipper" hydraulic clutch

Superb handling, incredible attention to detail

The Raider was inspired by the custom chopper movement, but since it’s a Star, it had to also handle, stop and go.

A 6-degree yoke angle—the first ever on a Star Motorcycle—makes it possible to achieve that custom raked-out look as well as neutral handling and straight-line cruisability: 33-degree rake plus 6 degrees yoke angle gives total rake of 39 degrees and 102mm of trail.

Custom 5-spoke wheels carry a 120/70-21-inch bias tire up front, and a wide, 210/40-18 radial out back—the tallest and widest ever on a Star.

Estimated 42 mpg* means this cruiser can go the distance between fill-ups.

2013 Yamaha Raider Features and Benefits

Engine:

• High-performance, 1854cc (113 cubic inch) air-cooled, long-stroke, OHV, 4 valves per cylinder, 48°, V-twin powerplant produces massive torque and class leading acceleration from very low rpms.

• Maximum torque occurs at 2,500 rpm while maximum power occurs at 4,500 rpm, providing exciting acceleration with great pulse and torque feel.

• Traditional pushrod valve actuation keeps engine height down for a lower centre of gravity and ensures more uniform heat dissipation due to absence of a cam chain case. A lower centre of gravity helps to ensure light, easy handling.

• Four-valve cylinder heads provide optimal breathing efficiency for great power delivery at all rpms. The two spark plugs per cylinder means faster, more complete combustion for maximum power output.

• Cylinder heads utilizes a pent roof combustion chamber design and features an oil passage near the exhaust valve seat to improve cooling and durability. The heads also feature engine mounting points on each side of the head for increased chassis rigidity for exceptional handling.

• Large size valves increase engine horsepower and torque. The intake valves are 36mm in diameter while the exhaust valves are 31mm.

• Specially designed valve train includes short design intake and exhaust rocker arms that reduce inertia during higher-rpm use.

• High performance spec twin, crankcase-mounted, high-lift cams ensure strong torque and class leading acceleration.

• Mechanical centrifugal decompression mechanism located in each of the exhaust camshafts, ensures fast, easy starts.

• Hydraulic valve lifters driven by the twin camshafts deliver exceptional performance and significantly reduce maintenance and tune-up requirements.

• The crankshaft is a single pin design, providing that special V-twin sound and pulse feel. Optimized flywheel mass and "damper-less" crankshaft allows the rider to feel the directness of the engine's power.

• For each rotation of the rear wheel, in 5th gear, the crank spins 3.14 times providing an outstanding rear wheel driving force feeling to the rider.

• Dual engine counter balancers reduce vibration for exceptional rider and passenger comfort. The balancers are positioned on either end of the crankshaft to reduce vibration and to minimize the size of the engine cases. The balancer is designed to reduce vibration while still allowing that classic V-twin pulse feel.

• 3-axis crankcase layout means the crankshaft, main axle and drive shaft are specially arranged to minimize the size of the engine cases and centralize mass.

• The dry sump oil lubrication system has been optimized to ensure maximum lubrication and cooling. Special oil nozzles direct oil at the bottom of the pistons to cool and lubricate them. Dry sump system means a more compact engine design since the oil tank is not part of the engine, which lowers the centre of gravity for great handling and a light feel.

•Special "dual chamber" crankcase design. The front section is for the crank assembly while the rear is for the transmission. Two, 3-rotor high capacity oil pumps optimizes oil flow in each of the two main sections of the engine.

• Huge 100mm ceramic composite-plated cylinder bores provide uniform heat dissipation, reduce weight, reduce friction and increase cylinder service life.

• Large-diameter 100mm pistons are both durable and lightweight. Yamaha's exclusive "controlled forged construction" keeps the pistons light for faster response and to accommodate higher rpms with reduced vibration and less reciprocating mass. The pistons feature an Alumite coating to reduce friction.

• Cooling fin thickness and depth is optimized for maximum heat dissipation, thereby eliminating the need for liquid cooling, while maintaining that traditional, stylish air-cooled engine appearance. Each cooling fin is specially polished to create shining highlights that change with the angle of the light.

• 43mm, twin-bore, downdraft throttle body fuel injection (FI) with throttle position sensor (TPS) ensures great throttle response and maximum power throughout the rev range. This system is a "closed loop" system, since it utilizes an oxygen sensor in the exhaust to monitor the concentration of oxygen and adjust the FI system if necessary. The benefits of fuel injection include chokeless operation, increased fuel economy, instant throttle response and reduced emissions.

• The 12-hole, 2-directional Mikuni fuel injectors produce a wide spray pattern for complete cylinder filling. This special spray pattern combined with the dual spark plug heads ensures complete combustion for maximum power. An Idle Speed Control (ISC) has been adopted to ensure stable idling performance.

• High capacity electronic fuel pump is located in the sub fuel tank under the seat.

• State-of-the-art Electronic Control Unit (ECU) ensures precisely metered fuel delivery and optimal ignition spark control using 3D mapping for each cylinder.

•Maintenance-free transistor controlled ignition (T.C.I.) provides a hot spark for sure starts and strong engine performance.

• 3.5 litre dual inlet air box features one inlet at the front and one at the rear of the air box for maximum breathing efficiency. This design not only maximizes air flow but also reduces weight and allows for a more open appearance at the steering head area. A viscous paper type air filter is used.

• Air Induction System (AIS) injects fresh oxygen at the exhaust port to ensure complete combustion thereby reducing harmful exhaust emissions (HC & CO) while a special air cut valve reduces backfiring when decelerating or coasting off throttle.

• High-performance, 2-into-1-into-2 exhaust system features large size header pipes for maximum flow. Dual 3-way honeycomb matrix catalyizers reduce harmful exhaust emissions. The stylish dual muffler helps to boost torque and horsepower while producing a throaty, V-twin growl. Heat shields protect the rider and passenger from hot components.

• The exhaust system also features a lightweight titanium EXUP exhaust power valve most commonly found on high performance sport bikes. The EXUP system not only provides crisp throttle response and eliminates 'flat spots" but also improves acceleration, reduces fuel consumption and harmful emissions too.

• Smooth-shifting, 5-speed transmission features optimized gear ratios for both strong low rpm acceleration and relaxed highway cruising. 5th gear is an overdrive gear for reduced engine rpms at highway speeds for maximum riding comfort.

• New "assist and slipper clutch" features a heavy duty 10 plate hydraulically operated wet clutch that reduces clutch lever pull / effort at the handlebar by 20%, for reduced hand fatigue and improved rider comfort. This newly designed clutch also features a back torque limiter function (also known as a slipper clutch). The slipper function helps to reduce the sharp effects of engine braking when downshifting. The end result is an easier to use clutch and smoother down shifting for an enhanced cruising / touring experience. This clutch is operated by hydraulic master cylinder instead of a cable. The hydraulic clutch design is low maintenance, self-adjusting and very stylish.

• Low-maintenance belt drive system not only significantly reduces maintenance but is also clean and quiet. A belt drive system uses less power than a shaft drive and reduces unsprung weight for great rear suspension performance. The belt is embedded with carbon fibre cords for incredible strength and durability

• Easy access, spin-on type oil filter means fast, easy oil changes.

Chassis and Suspension:

• High tech, ast aluminium double-cradle frame reduces weight, while balancing strength and rigidity. The engine is rigidly mounted in the frame for added rigidity. The critical head pipe area features box type construction for additional strength. The frame not only provides excellent handling characteristics but also compliments the beautiful flowing lines of the entire machine. The open area behind and below the steering head helps to enhance that "chopper inspired" styling image. The main front wire harness is hidden in the head pipe for a clean appearance.

Important Note: Raked out front fork with lots of trail generally provides good straight line stability but often results in heavy steering. The engineers at Yamaha will not sacrifice handling for styling, so they have developed a 6 degree yoke offset angle combined with a 34 degree steering head for a total fork angle of 40 degrees. The Raider provides light "athletic handling and easy steering" not commonly found on a custom styled bike. This bike was designed to be ridden !! Key numbers: 6 degree yoke offset angle; 34 degree caster angle; 102mm of trail.

• Lightweight C.F. die cast aluminium swingarm offers superb rigidity and ensures excellent stability and handling. The C.F. die casting process allows for beautiful shapes that are both strong and light. This swingarm is a fashion statement in aluminium and compliments the rest of the Raider's eye catching styling.

• Rigid 46mm Kayaba front fork offers 130mm (5.1") of wheel travel for exceptionally stable handling and great ride comfort. The inner fork tubes are protected by stylish chrome chip guards.

• Beefy, cast aluminium, top triple clamp and computer designed lower triple clamp with a 6 degree yoke offset angle provides excellent handling qualities while maintaining that custom chopper inspired styling.

• Link rear suspension features a spring preload adjustable single rear shock delivering outstanding ride comfort and precise handling. The Kayaba shock is horizontally positioned under the engine lowering the centre of gravity for great handling. The shock is hidden to provide that classic "hardtail" look. Rear wheel travel is 90mm (3.5").

• Powerful dual 298mm floating front discs are squeezed by ultra rigid, 4-piston, monoblock calipers to provide sport-bike spec stopping power with great lever feel and feedback.

• Beautiful custom looking 5-spoke cast aluminium 21" front wheel provides a special styling highlight. The width is 3.50 inches wide and is fitted with a 120/70 profile tire. The rear wheel is also a custom inspired 5-spoke 18 inch cast aluminium mag design that is 7.5 inches wide. This rear wheel carries the widest rear tire ever installed on a Yamaha motorcycle … it is a 210 / 40 tire. Both wheels are fitted with tubeless tires.

• Large 310mm rear disc is squeezed by a single piston caliper mounted below the swingarm for a lower center of gravity and that customized "hidden look".

• Two-piece seat design features a deep notch in the rider seat to give that chopper inspired riding position … more sitting in than sitting on. The rear portion of the rider's seat also doubles as a back support for the rider.

• 60/55w headlight with unique custom inspired styling can be adjusted up and down and left or right .

• Steel fenders front and rear can be easily customized or painted to suit personal preferences. Custom styled one piece rear fender mounts.

• Flangeless teardrop style main fuel tank offers 12 litres of capacity. There are no welds visible, providing that clean, custom look. Total fuel capacity is 15.9 litres thanks to a 3.9 litre sub tank located low in the frame below the seat. A high pressure electric fuel pump with quick connect fittings provides fuel to the FI system.

• Large 1.25" diameter handlebars. All electrical wires are hidden inside the handlebars for that clean custom look. Selected meter functions can be controlled by buttons on the back of RHS switch gear.

• Classic fuel tank mounted instrument panel. This comprehensive instrumentation includes an analogue speedo, and fuel gauge with low fuel warning light, plus a digital odometer, dual tripmeters, fuel reserve trip counter and clock. Background illumination can be adjusted to suit personal preferences. Reset buttons are located on the instrument panel while the select switch is located on the left hand switch gear so you can tab through the various functions without removing your hands from the handlebars.

• Extra wide, brake and clutch levers provide that quality feel and look.
