2013 Ducati Monster 1100 EVO Diesel Review

DUCATI MONSTER DIESEL

Be brave, be unique

Ducati and fashion brand, Diesel, joined forces to create the Monster Diesel, a brave combination of "iconic naked motorcycle" and "urban military chic", designed to celebrate authentic Italian style at its purest.

With Ducati's flagship Monster 1100EVO providing the canvas for the creation, Diesel's founder Renzo Rosso and the Ducati Design Centre guided stylists to a military inspired theme, expressing the core values of the partnership and realising an avant garde choice for connoisseurs of lifestyle motorcycling.

Set against the black treatment of Ducati's Trellis frame, wheels, footrest hangers, handlebars, engine covers, exhaust system and forks, the exclusive 'Diesel Brave Green matte' livery delivers a rugged military vehicle feel, while front brake callipers are finished in shocking yellow to make a strong reminder of the model's performance heritage. The Monster Diesel instrumentation cover further underlines a sophisticated continuity of design, with military-style exhaust heat guards created in as similar fashion.

Diesel proudly signs the bike with its denim line label stitched into the leather upholstered seat in addition to laser-engraving the unmistakable "Mohican" logo into the new aluminum air intakes. The model's exclusivity is further enhanced with a metal plaque attached to the re-shaped passenger seat cover and engraved with "SPECIALLY MADE FOR U" with the owner's name and individual motorcycle series number.

The Monster Diesel is complemented with a dedicated Capsule Collection designed by Diesel for those who share a desire for urban motorcycle fashion and the passion for these two great Italian brands.

DUCATI MONSTER 1100EVO

Monster evolution
The Monster 1100EVO further enhances the Monster family's defining concepts of functionality, style and sport with an evolution of the flagship model. Taking its name from the Desmodue Evoluzione engine, which delivers a Monster milestone 100hp, the 1100EVO rolls out with the latest generation exhaust system, comfort-enhanced ergonomics, Marzocchi front suspension and refined tail-end in addition to the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) of ABS brake system and 4-level Ducati Traction Control (DTC). The Monster 1100EVO was the first ever Monster to be equipped with DTC.

Ducati's application of the "EVO" treatment now runs deep throughout the Ducati range and its introduction to the ever-improving Monster family was inevitable. It completes a stylish family of lifestyle motorcycles with high attention to user-friendly and safety-conscious detail, while ensuring the Monster's cult status as a design icon of hand-built, naked motorcycles remains as authentic as ever.

The ultimate Monster
The Monster 1100EVO took everything great about the new generation Monster family and added an evolution of upgrades that took the Monster concept to the next level. The Desmodue Evoluzione engine is Ducati's first 2-valve motor to hit the 100hp mark and its super-smooth power delivery is sure to delight riders the world over. Add to that the latest generation, power-enhancing exhaust system with low level cannon-style, vertically stacked silencers that leave the tail-end looking sharp and minimalistic and the
introduction of DSP, consisting of the user-friendly, 4-level DTC that supports the ABS system in enhanced rider control, and it's plain to see that this really is an "evolution" model. But it doesn't end there.

Quality by design
Part of Ducati's approach to Quality improvement is to blend owner feed-back into the design process of new models, and the Monster 1100EVO is an iconic example. Ergonomics were totally revised with the a reshaped seat and bar-risers for the rider and a rear sub-frame ready to accept the confidence-inspiring Ducati Performance grab-rail kit for the passenger, whose comfort is further enhanced with a low-slung, rerouted exhaust system. Add to these enhancements rubber-mounted rear indicators and a compact
number plate holder with LED lighting, and it is clear that Ducati listened to every last detail.

The 'less-is-more' philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati's continuous pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles and with the EVO's dry weight at 169kg (373lb) it represents the lightest, most compact bike in its category.

The Monster 1100EVO is the result of constant evolution in design and technology. The powerful and breathtaking top-of-the-range model boasts attractive ergonomics and presents pure style and charisma, while preserving the essence of the original naked bike concept. The EVO design perfectly balances sports performance, stunning looks and safety-conscious riding pleasure and its seductive lines are the product of a Ducati philosophy where form and function combine to create the quintessential naked bike.

Ducati Safety Pack (DSP)
The Monster 1100EVO was the first model to introduce the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), configured to enhance rider control on Ducati's lifestyle models. DSP consists of the ultra-dependable Brembo-Bosch ABS braking system and user-friendly 4-level Ducati Traction Control (DTC). Both systems are supplied as original equipment and complement each other to provide a major contribution to safer motorcycling.

Accessible from the left-hand switchgear and displayed on the digital instrumentation, the DTC system offers a choice of four levels, each one programmed with an increasing level of interaction graded from one to four. While level four administers a confidence-building, high level of interaction from the system by activating upon the slightest amount of wheel-spin, level one offers a lesser amount of intervention for more competent, sport-oriented riders. When the level is selected and DTC activated, the level is displayed on the instrumentation.

Front and rear wheel sensors then compare speed differential to sense when rear traction is being broken (wheel-spin) and DTC decides the best combination of two different types of instant electronic adjustment, calculated with data supplied from multiple sources. The first 'soft' stage of system interaction is executed by high speed software that makes instant electronic adjustment to the ignition timing, administering varying amounts of ignition retardation to reduce the engine's torque.

If the DTC software detects that the first 'soft' stage of system interaction is inadequate to control the wheelspin, it continues to administer ignition retardation and, in addition, instructs the engine ECU to initiate a pattern of constantly increasing injection cuts until, if necessary, full injection cut. During all stages of interaction, the two warning lights - normally used to signify the over-rev limiter - illuminate to indicate that DTC is being applied. As soon as the system recognises the gradual return of equal wheel speeds, it incrementally re-establishes normal power delivery. This seamless interaction is key to the super-smooth operation of the system and represents a considerable increase in performance safety during mid-corner acceleration.

The Brembo-Bosch ABS developed by Ducati combines with top quality brake system components to deliver outstanding performance and confident control. Designed to reduce the risk of wheel-lock under heavy braking or when braking in low grip conditions, the system reads wheel speed data from phonic wheel sensors to detect potential wheel lock. If the wheel speed differential falls below a specific safety limit, the control unit immediately reduces the brake system pressure to the appropriate calliper to avoid wheel lock.

The pressure reduction on each individual braking circuit is activated by electronically controlled valves, which then close as the wheel speed differential moves away from a locking scenario.

The Desmodue 1100 Evoluzione
The lightweight, L-Twin stands at the pinnacle of more than three decades of Desmo air-cooled development and its torquey power delivery has excited riders worldwide. Its latest evolution combined with the Monster's airbox capacity and latest exhaust configuration marks a milestone for Ducati's 2-valve engine as the first to reach 100hp.

The 1100cc Desmodue Evoluzione power unit continues to use a bore and stroke of 98 x 71.5mm, but its long list of refinements have boosted its power to 100hp (73.5kW) at 7500rpm with 76lb-ft (10.5kgm) of torque at 6000rpm giving it smooth power delivery from city-like low rpm to exhilarating open road performance at redline.

The 1100's crankcases are vacuum cast using Vacural® technology, a process that achieves significant weight saving and ensures consistent wall thickness and increased strength. In addition to the magnesium alternator cover, the 1100 has a lightweight crankshaft assembly, using an 848-style Superbike flywheel and weight-saving rare-earth magnets for the generator assembly.

Power gains came not only from the crankshaft assembly, but also from an evolution of the top-end of the Desmodue power unit. The cylinder head, which introduced enhanced lubrication and cooling performance, also has a special inlet port shape for optimum flow and a combustion chamber shaped for improved burn efficiency. This improved efficiency included an 11.3:1 compression ration and the change to a single spark per cylinder ignition now managed by high-speed Siemens electronics.

Ensuring a sufficient feed and maximum volumetric efficiency to the high compression set-up are equally high valve lift values, safely enabled by Ducati's unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valves to follow the steep closure profiles of the cam lobes if they were relying upon normal valve springs. With the Desmo system, the valves are closed mechanically with the same accuracy as they are opened, enabling steep cam profiles and
radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati power unit including the race-winning Superbike and Desmosedici GP engines.

The Monster 1100EVO uses a slipper-clutch specially designed for the "wet" clutches of larger capacity engines. It features an oil bath system with 'slipper' function and super-light feel at the lever. Its design uses a progressive self-servo mechanism that presses the plates together when under drive from the engine, enabling the reduction of the clutch spring rates. This results in a much lighter clutch lever at the handlebar, ideal in traffic or long journeys. When the drive force is reversed (over-run), the same mechanism reduces the pressure on the clutch plates, enabling them to provide a race-like 'slipper' action which reduces the destabilizing effect of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting and provides a much smoother feeling when closing the throttle or down-shifting under normal riding conditions. An additional cush-drive damper mechanism also smoothes the repeated transition from drive to over-run during stop-start traffic. The clutch and alternator covers are finished in a sophisticated looking carbon grey.

EVO exhaust
The latest generation exhaust system follows a revised 2-1-2 routing to ensure the EVO's power-enhancing and efficient power delivery and dedicates a lambda probe to each header to ensure precise fueling. While the stylish cannon-style, vertically stacked silencers carry catalytic converters to provide Euro 3 conformity, an electronically controlled mid-section valve optimises exhaust pressures throughout the rev-range. The revised positioning of the aluminium silencers leaves the rear-end of the Monster looking sharp and minimalistic and ensures uncompromised passenger comfort.

1100 chassis
Exceptional handling, combined with 75.9lb-ft (10.5kgm) of torque from the Desmo engine, results in a pure, adrenalin-filled ride and at just 169kg (373lb), the Monster 1100EVO is the lightest bike in its class. The lightweight aluminium sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the single-sided swingarm and aluminium footrest hangers, which are rider and passenger separated. The passenger footpeg hangers are designed to attach directly to the rear sub-frame, which also accepts the passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available from Ducati Performance. The footpegs and grab-rail kit provide increased passenger riding comfort and further enhance the EVO's stylish lines.

Fully adjustable 43mm Marzocchi forks and Sachs rising-rate rear suspension unit, with adjustable spring pre-load and return damping, offer sufficient personalisation to suit all riding styles and provide the perfect 'feel'. The steeply angled rear unit compresses in a movement non-linear to the rear swingarm radius, which achieves progressive characteristics, enables easy access to the spring pre-load and rebound damping adjuster, and eliminates the weight of any rocker-arm mechanism.

The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster 1100EVO a "pure sports" look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is made in chill-cast aluminium, achieving optimum mechanical characteristics while reducing final weight for improved handling.

Stylish and lightweight aluminium alloy 10-spoke wheels reduce unsprung weight and improve agility and are fitted with a 120/70ZR tyre at the front and a 180/55ZR at the rear, both Pirelli Diablo Rosso II. The result is lightweight, precise steering that is extremely responsive at all speeds while giving the vehicle exceptional stability. The sports character of the bike is further accentuated by aluminium tapered handlebars.

The power of the Monster 1100EVO can rely upon a best-in-category braking system that provides excellent, precise and controllable braking performance. The impressive Brembo system features radial pumps with adjustable levers feeding four-piston radial callipers which grip twin 320mm discs. The rear brake uses a 2-piston calliper operating on a 245mm disc. As an integral component of the Ducati Safety Pack, ABS comes as standard equipment on the Monster 1100EVO.

The essence of naked
The Monster has revolutionized the world of motorcycling, becoming more than just a simple motorcycle: it's a way of life, it's what makes its riders feel unique. Its customised versions owned by 250,000 enthusiasts have made it a true and proper icon that transcends time. Twenty years after its birth, Ducati celebrates this symbol of style and personality, presenting a unique model: the very first one. An unmistakable style coupled with latest-generation performance: here's the Monster 20th Anniversary, the motorcycle that continues to write history.

2013 Ducati Monster 1100 EVO Diesel Key Features

Based on Monster 1100EVO
The Monster Diesel is technically based on 1100EVO standard version and offers the same technical equipment and specifications

Less is Monster
The 'less-is-more' philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati's never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more 'pared down' than their predecessors. Every single component has been redesigned and redeveloped so now more than ever, form follows function. With any details detracting from the Monster concept being eliminated, 'less-is-more' also means 'less-is-Monster'. Less weight plus more torque equals fun-filled riding.

Monster Story
In 1992 Ducati unveiled a new prototype that was to become an icon. Ducati's creation awed the crowds and the world's media of that year's Cologne International Motorcycle show. The 900 Monster was a motorcycle that created a truly new niche - dramatically styled, minimalist in stature yet bristling with innovative engineering solutions. The Monster's radical styling has also provided the inspiration for an entire after-market sector specialising in hot-rod parts for this legendary machine. For this reason, rarely do you see two Monsters the same. This radical and refreshing design departure also influenced other manufacturers but, as the old adage states: imitation is the highest form of flattery... The Monster is characterised by a long and successful history, by its introduction during the years of numerous cylinders and uncountable colour options, but above all by a constant technological evolution that this year brings us to the birth of the last version: the Monster 1100EVO, "The Ultimate Monster".

Minimum weight, maximum fun
The Monster 1100EVO offers a greater enhanced driving pleasure. The exceptional handling comes from a further reduced weight (169 kg dry weight), combined with the new 100 hp engine Desmodue Evoluzione, the most powerful 2-valve Ducati ever. Every single component has been created to satisfy a Ducati rider’s needs and provide unrivalled agility and handling. That is why Ducati engineers, designers and testers have aimed for the best possible set-up and the Monster is able to ensure the best handling of all naked bikes.

Engine

Vacural® crankcases
The two-valve engine on the Monster 1100EVO features a crankcase which significantly reduces overall engine weight. They are produced using the same innovative Vacural® technology that Ducati previously applied only to Supersport models.
This method of production relies on vacuum die-casting, which improves the quality of the casting by avoiding porosity, air pockets and oxidation. This enables greater dimensional accuracy and higher ductility for the aluminium alloy. Ducati designers have drawn upon the benefits of this innovative process, redefining the conformation and thickness of the sides on the new crankcase using finite element simulations (FEM) and tests, which resulted in achieving the required reliability standards as well as attaining a weight reduction of the crankcase.

Power & torque curves
The Monster 1100EVO delivers 100CV (73,5kW) @ 7500rpm and 10,5kgm (103Nm) @ 6000rpm Compared with the previous Monster 1100, the new engine data performance ensures a more exciting riding experience at high revs and a super-smoother power delivery thanks to a more linear torque curve.

Desmodue Evoluzione
The Monster 1100EVO is powered by the Desmodue Evoluzione engine which is the first two-valve Ducati to hit the 100 hp. Compared with the previous 1100 cc Twin cylinder air-cooled L Desmodromic, this new engine gives an even greater adrenalin rush thanks to the superior power level at high revs while a more linear torque curve ensures a super-smoother power delivery. The 1100 cc Twin Desmodromic has been tuned in order to increase both volumetric and combustion efficiency. The inlet ports and the combustion chamber shape have been redesigned, while the new camshafts have an extreme profile to provide an increased valve lift. The pistons are new too and feature an high compression profile. To ensure high standards of reliability the head cooling system has been revised with improved lubrication to enhance the cooling performance.

Wet clutch
The Monster 1100EVO features a new wet clutch which ensures quiet operation and long life. In addition, the progressive self-servo mechanism reduces the lever effort at the handlebar and makes the Monster even more practical in traffic. The Monster 1100EVO wet clutch works with a race-like ‘slipper’ system which reduces the destabilizing effect of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting, and compared with other wet clutch used so far by Ducati, features an additional cush-drive damper mechanism which smoothes the repeated transition from drive to over-run during stop-start traffic.

Chassis

Marzocchi forks
The 43mm upside down fully adjustable Marzocchi forks offer sufficient personalisation to suit all riding styles and provide that perfect ‘feel’. The suspension set-up developed by Ducati testers is a perfect balance between handling and driving pleasure under all conditions.

Lightweight 10-spoke wheels
The Monster 1100EVO is equipped with lightweight aluminum alloy wheels with the new 10-spoke design. The new wheels reduce unsprung weight and contributes to increase the agility and, with their sporty look, to stress the superior performance. The front wheel (3,50 x 17) is equipped with a 120/70ZR tire, the rear (5,50 x 17) with a 180/55ZR tire. The result is a light steering, reliable and sincere in their responses at all speeds, giving the vehicle exceptional stability.

Single-sided swingarm
The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster a ‘tough’ look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is chill-cast using aluminium in its most noble form. Gravity cast and heat treated, the component achieves the best mechanical characteristics as well as reduced final weight for improved handling.

Sachs rear suspension
TThe Sachs rising-rate rear suspension unit offers adjustable spring pre-load and return damping.
Using the proven ‘cantilever' system, the steeply angled rear unit compresses in a movement non-linear to the rear swingarm radius, thus achieving a progressive action. This enables easy access to the spring pre-load and rebound damping adjuster, while eliminating the weight of the rocker-arm mechanism. The suspension set-up developed by the Ducati testers is the perfect balance of handling and driving pleasure for all conditions.

Monster Trellis
An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of the Monster. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the chassis design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity. A separate, all aluminium sub-frame saves weight and adds a pleasing continuity with the aluminium footrest hangers and matte finished swingarm.

Ergonomics
With its slim waist and wide handlebars, the new Monster is the ideal bike for any riding style, in the midst of city traffic and in the winding curves. With a total steering angle of 64 degrees, an extremely intuitive and ergonomic handle position, a tapered and deeply sculpted fuel tank, the Monster offers the rider a comfortable and safe control of the vehicle at all times. The Monster 1100EVO further improves comfort quality with a comfort-enhancing new seat embellished with red stitching and 20 mm higher bar-risers. The Monster 1100EVO also features a rear sub-frame ready to support the confidence-inspiring Ducati Performance grab-rail kit for the passenger. The suspension set-up developed by Ducati testers is the perfect balance of handling and driving pleasure for all conditions.

Lightweight construction
The ‘less-is-more’ philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati’s never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more ‘pared down’ than their predecessors. The Monster 1100EVO goes further. The weight saving solutions used by the Desmodue Evoluzione engine construction, such as the alternator cover made in magnesium and the flywheel lightened of the Ducati 848EVO, in combination with a lighter exhaust, reduce to 169kg the total dry weight (-2kg compared to the Monster 1100).

Brembo brakes
The power and charisma of the new Monster 1100EVO can rely upon a best-in-category braking system that provides excellent, precise and controllable braking performance. The vigorous Brembo system is the direct result of Ducati Corse racing experience, featuring radial pumps with adjustable levers feeding four-piston radial callipers which grip twin 320 mm discs. The rear brake uses a 2-piston calliper operating on a 245mm disc. Ducati has further improved this powerful braking system, adding as standard content the ABS system which allows the best braking under any riding situation.

Equipment

Ducati Safety Pack (DSP)
In developing the Monster 1100EVO attention has been paid not only to performance enhancement, but also in ensuring both rider and passenger a high level of safety in all driving conditions. This second goal has been achieved by equipping the Ducati Monster 1100EVO with the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), which comes as standard along with the ABS system and the famous Ducati Traction Control (DTC). This is the first time it has been available on a Monster.

Signed by Diesel
Diesel signs the bike with its label and logo: the Diesel label used for denim clothes is stitched on the right side of the genuine leather upholstered seat, while the new Aluminum made air intakes are laser-engraved with the unmistakable "Mohican" logo.

DTC
The Monster 1100EVO is the first two valve engine model to be equipped with the state of the art Ducati Traction Control system (DTC). The Monster 1100EVO DTC system uses the same software logic developed and used by Ducati Corse for their winning bikes in MotoGP and Superbike Championships. The system offers a choice of four profiles, each one programmed with a wheel-spin tolerance matched to progressive riding levels of skill graded from one to four. While level four administers a confidence-building, high level of interaction from the system by activating upon the slightest amount of wheel-spin, level one offers a much higher tolerance and, therefore, much less intervention for highly competent riders. The Monster 1100EVO comes standard with the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) which includes DTC + ABS.

Leather seat
The Monster Diesel is equipped with a genuine leather upholstered seat featuring horizontal ribs; standard outfit includes a passenger seat cover with a special design that contributes, together with other aesthetic interventions, to a "military-inspired" look; at cover front end is a customised metal plate with the progressive number and customer's personal data, enhancing the exclusive look of this version.

ABS
The ABS system provides a major contribution towards active safety as it's designed to reduce the risk of wheel-lock under panic braking or when braking in low grip conditions. The Monster 1100EVO comes standard with the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) and includes DTC + ABS.

Empowering Controls
The Monster 1100EVO features radial pumps with adjustable levers on beautifully shaped aluminium tapered handlebars.

DDA ready
The instrument display also doubles as a control panel for the activation of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. The bike has been built ‘system-ready’ for the data acquisition kit, which consists of special DDA software and a memory key that slots into a plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy new battery charger available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

Exhaust system
The Monster 1100EVO features a completely revised 2-1-2 routing exhaust system with two aggressive low level cannon-style, vertically stacked silencers placed on the right side, which give off in fullness the famous sound of the Twin-cylinder Ducati engine. The new exhaust system, equipped with tow Lambda probes and an electronically controlled valve, is a crucial component in achieving the excellent torque and engine power, and a fundamental style element used by the Ducati designers to emphasize the superior performance of the new Monster 1100EVO.
On the Monster Diesel, the black tailpipes and double silencer matched with the newly designed heat shields taking inspiration from the military cartridge-belts lend the exhaust system a more threatening look, making it the stylish item at the heart of this new version.

LED taillight
An LED rear light unit satisfies the minimalist, weight-saving design ethos found throughout the Monster 696. The specially designed strip of LED are enhanced by a special diffuser lens to deliver outstanding light clarity and incredible longevity.
For the Monster 1100EVO, even the license plate light uses LED technology.

Headlight
The triple-parabola headlight on the Monster utilises the latest optical technology and advanced construction techniques to provide an incredibly compact lighting package. In spite of its compact size, the headlight throws a broad and deep beam to provide excellent visibility and make night riding safer. Viewed from the side, its discrete silhouette mimics the radical shape of the fuel tank.

Instrumentation
Visually simple digital instrumentation provides an array of data on command or, at a glance, just speed and revs. Information available at your fingertip include: scheduled maintenance warning, oil temperature, trip odometer, lap time, fuel reserve, warning light for low oil pressure, turn signals, over-rev warning, immobilizer and neutral warning light, ABS and DTC level.

2013 Ducati Monster 1100 EVO Diesel Features and Benefits

MONSTER FAMILY FEATURES

Monster frame
An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of all Monsters. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the frame design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity and enables a useful 64 degrees of lock-to-lock steering travel.

The lightweight aluminium sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the footrest hangers and swingarm, and is designed to accept a passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. The kit further enhances passenger ride comfort without compromising the Monster's stylish lines.

Monster ABS
The 2013 Monster family offers all 696 and 796 models with optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), while the 1100EVO and Monster Diesel has ABS fitted as standard equipment.

Monster instrumentation
Looking clean and minimalist in true Monster style, the brightly illuminated display provides all essential data by default, and even more by scrolling with the left-hand switchgear. Data includes speed, revs, time, scheduled maintenance, oil temperature, ABS status (when applicable), DTC status (1100EVO and Monster Diesel only) and battery voltage, while warning lights illuminate for oil pressure, fuel reserve, turn indicators, high beam and neutral selection. In addition, the instruments present a reserve fuel trip, immobiliser status and automatic light-off function after 60 seconds with the key on as well as a memory to store lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.

For the Monster 1100EVO and Monster Diesel, the display also doubles as a control panel for the 4-level Ducati Traction Control system included in the Ducati Safety Package (DSP), in addition to the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. All Monsters are built "system-ready" for the data acquisition kit, which consists of a special DDA software and memory key that slots into USB style plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy "battery maintainer" available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

Monster Desmo
The incredible valve performances of the Desmodue engine are made possible because of Ducati's unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valves to follow the steep closure profiles of the cam lobes if they were relying upon normal valve springs. With the Desmo system, the valves are closed mechanically with the same accuracy as they are opened, enabling steep cam profiles and radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati power unit including the race-winning Superbike and Desmosedici GP engines.

Monster quality
Having more experience with twin-cylinder high performance engines than any other manufacturer, the aircooled L-Twin remains central to Ducati's philosophy of motorcycling. This experience, plus constant investment in quality by design, advanced materials and engineering techniques has enabled a distance between service intervals of 7,500 miles (12,000km) making Ducati ownership even more enjoyable.

2012 Ducati Multistrada 1200S Touring Key Features and Benefits

CONCEPT

Endless transformations - The new Ducati Multistrada 1200 combines innovative design and unprecedented technology to unleash four-bikes-in-one. Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro riding modes now enable a truly enjoyable and customisable riding experience separated by just one click. The ground-breaking design makes instant adjustment to power and torque delivery in addition to electronic adjustment of suspension settings and traction control, transforming the Multistrada 1200 to the rider’s needs, and not the other way around. Hailed as a true ‘game-changing’ motorcycle, the technologically-advanced Multistrada 1200 introduces the new 150hp Testastretta 11° engine, and advanced ergonomics to be powerful, playful and a comfortable and versatile adventure on two wheels.

Sport - The Sport riding mode delivers an adrenalin-filled 150hp ride with sports-oriented throttle response and, on the ‘S’ version, an instant high performance suspension set-up. In character with its Superbike bloodline, DTC immediately adjusts to a level for expert riders whose ‘comfort zone’ is a little closer to the limit. Ducati's racing experience combined with first-rate components makes riding the Multistrada 1200 a pure motorcycling thrill and a dream come true for those searching for best-in-class performance as well as comfort.

S philosophy - The Multistrada 1200S is available in two editions: Sport, Touring and Pikes Peak. The Sport Edition is equipped with carbon fibre components including front air-intakes cam belt covers, rear hugger and lateral air extractors . The Touring Edition features side panniers, heated grips and centre stand.

The Pikes Peak Special Edition is the replica of the bike that won the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race, demonstrating extraordinary all-terrain versatility and showing off that sporting DNA that is an intrinsic part of all Ducati models. The Pikes Peak Special Edition embodies the racing spirit of the Multistrada and has been conceived for all those with a competitive streak: Ducati Corse colour scheme, carbon fibre nose fairing and Ducati Performance exhaust (type approved for EU countries only).

Additionally, the bike also features the innovative DES (Ducati Electronic Suspension) system, which provides automatic electronic adjustment of the Ohlins suspension, and ABS, both fitted as standard.

Urban - As navigation of the urban jungle can require an even more user-friendly motorcycle, the Urban riding mode instantly transforms the Multistrada 1200 into the most manageable, practical and desirable everyday transport. Power output is adjusted to 100hp and DTC is further enhanced to provide increased intervention during the most chaotic of stop-start traffic. On the ‘S’ version, the suspension instantly selects a setting designed to tackle the maze of city streets full of speed bumps and drain covers.

Touring - While the Touring riding mode is also programmed to produce 150hp, the power characteristics are designed in a configuration that delivers a smoother and more user-friendly throttle response. Active safety is already available with the advanced ABS system, but in Touring mode it is further enhanced by increasing DTC intervention to a level specifically intended for a relaxing ride and, on the ‘S’ version, the suspension automatically dials-in a setting ideal for long distance journeys, ensuring maximum comfort for both the rider and passenger and making every mile an absolute pleasure.

Enduro - If the route leaves the beaten track, the Multistrada 1200 is ready to take it in its stride. Agile, lightweight and with high, wide handlebars, serrated footrests, stylish sump guard and specially designed tyres, the Multistrada also features an Enduro riding mode which instantly delivers a smooth 100hp. With DTC reset to an off-road suitable level for less intervention and the all-mode option to disable the ABS, the ‘S’ version also dials-in an appropriate suspension setting ready for when the asphalt runs out.

ENGINE

Vacural® crankcases - The Testastretta 11° features vacuum die-cast crankcases, formed using Vacural® technology, a process that achieves a significant weight saving and ensures consistent wall thickness and increased strength.

Testastretta 11° - A desire to make the World Superbike engine accessible to everyone resulted in the design and creation of the brand new Testastretta 11°, a motor that's a racer at heart and yet ready for long-distance touring or everyday urban use. So named because of its minimised 11° of ‘valve overlap’ - the interval of crankshaft rotation during which both intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time - the new Desmodromic power plant not only transforms the Testastretta Evoluzione’s world championship-winning 41° configuration into a super-smooth motor for sport touring, but also improves fuel efficiency, emissions and cost of scheduled maintenance. The Testastretta 11° is an engine for all environments and the perfect ‘game-changer’ for the four-bikes-in-one concept.

Sump-guard - The bike is suitable for off-road riding. Off-road use is enabled by the extra-long travel, reduced-weight suspension, as well as a robust and effective structural sump guard in aluminium which protects the oil sump from bumpy ground.

24,000 km major service intervals - The Multistrada 1200 has been subjected to the most intensive development program ever. With the goal of setting the bar even higher, Ducati developed revolutionary new features for the 4-bikes-in-1 concept and took aim at industry benchmarks to create a model that would go the distance, both figuratively and literally.

Overdrive - The gearbox and final drive ratios have also been optimised to enable reduced fuel consumption and achieve increased riding comfort by reducing vibration. If the 1198 Superbike reaches its top speed in 6th gear, the Multistrada 1200 is able to reach it in 5th gear and maintain it effortlessly in 6th.

Emissions - On the new Testastretta 11° engine, this angle has been reduced from 41°, used in the Testastretta Evoluzione engine which powers the 1198, to just 11°. As a result, the fresh inlet charge flow is less compromised by the exiting exhaust gases, resulting in a much smoother combustion in addition to improved fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions. Unburnt hydrocarbon emissions (pre-catalyser) are reduced by up to 65% and specific fuel consumption (and consequent CO2 emissions) by up to 15% (Euro3).

Torque assisted slipper-clutch - The Multistrada 1200 features an oil bath clutch with ‘slipper’ function and super-light feel at the lever. Its design uses a progressive self-servo mechanism that presses the plates together when under drive from the engine, enabling the reduction of the clutch spring rates. This results in a much lighter clutch lever at the handlebar, ideal in stop-start traffic or long journeys. When the drive force is reversed (over-run), the same mechanism reduces the pressure on the clutch plates, enabling them to provide a race-like ‘slipper’ action, which reduces the destabilizing effect of the rear-end under aggressive down-shifting and provides a much smoother feeling when closing the throttle or down-shifting under normal riding conditions.

Ride-by-Wire - The Ride-by-Wire RbW system is an electronic interface between the twistgrip and the engine which decides the ideal power response depending on the riding mode selected and according to the rider’s throttle input. The twistgrip no longer has a throttle cable connected directly to the throttle body butterflies, but instead delivers a signal to a control unit, which in turn operates the butterfly opening. The RbW system uses three different mappings to regulate the power delivery. The three maps offer 150hp with a sports-type delivery, 150hp with a progressive delivery suitable for touring and 100hp with progressive delivery for city or off-road use.

Exhaust system - For Ducati, design is not just creating an attractive look. It is about knowing how best to combine exciting appearance with intelligent function and outstanding performance. Even the Multistrada 1200’s exhaust tail pipes are a feature that perfectly demonstrates this concept. Their innovative design is well integrated with the motorcycle’s overall shape and the positioning of the exhaust system improves overall weight distribution. The tailpipes are short so they do not impinge on the space needed for the side luggage. The internal structure of the silencer is designed to achieve the characteristic Ducati sound without compromising compliance with sound and hydrocarbon emission standards (Euro3).

CHASSIS

Seat - The Multistrada 1200 seat immediately transmits a sense of comfort. Constructed in two separate sections for the rider and passenger, the design focussed on form and cushion density to ensure maximum comfort during long journeys and user-friendly lateral shaping to help give sure-footed ground contact when stationary. A confidence-inspiring passenger grab-handle offers a secure and comfortable grip.

Brembo brakes - The front brakes use twin radially-mounted Brembo four piston, two pad callipers actuated by a master cylinder with an adjustable lever. The fronts grip 320mm discs, while a single 245mm disc on the rear is gripped by a single Brembo calliper. Typical of all Ducatis, these components ensure high performance braking and set the standard in this segment. The Multistrada 1200 is also equipped with a Bosch-Brembo ABS system, optional for the standard version and fitted as original equipment on the ‘S’ version. It delivers outstanding braking performance in all conditions and provides a major contribution towards performance safety. An option to disable the ABS is available via the instrumentation, but is automatically reactivated at the next ignition-on.

Ergonomics - The Multistrada 1200 was subjected to an extensive ergonomic study using both CAD and repeated prototype testing, guaranteeing a high level of comfort with a fully loaded motorcycle for long-range touring. The ‘ergonomics triangle’ of handlebar, seat and footpegs has been designed for both the rider and passenger, optimising comfort while providing a commanding and upright riding position. The Multistrada 1200 feels spacious and accommodates both rider and passenger in complete comfort, even with the top case and side luggage in place. Its 1530mm (60.2in) wheelbase ensures that not only the weight of the passenger remains inside the wheelbase length, but also that of the side luggage when loaded, a considerable contribution to the motorcycle’s dynamic performance. Underlining its multi-tasking intention, ergonomic attention was even applied when designing the riding position while standing on the footpegs, off-road style.

Fuel tank - The fuel tank has been developed using a new moulding technology which enables a favourable balance between capacity and weight. Subject to riding style, the 20 litre (5.3 gallon US) capacity can provide up to 400km (250 mile) of motorcycle pleasure between fuel stops by returning approximately 47mpg (US) (56mpg UK) at a constant 75mph (120km/h).

Magnesium front subframe - The high pressure, die-cast, magnesium front subframe reduces the high, frontal weight and contributes to chassis feel and control.

Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES) by Ohlins - The ‘S’ version of the Multistrada 1200 is equipped with the latest generation 48mm Öhlins forks featuring the innovative Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES). The brand new fork technology enables rebound and compression damping adjustments electronically controlled via the instrument panel. The top of the range Öhlins TTX rear monoshock is also adjusted electronically in both spring pre-load and rebound and compression damping. The electronic suspension adjustment can be made easily by using the pre-set riding modes, which have been developed by Ducati test riders, or independent mode, which allows riders to use their own personal settings. Adjustments made electronically send a signal that initiates electronic actuators mounted on the suspension units. In addition to the riding modes of Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro, there is also an option to quickly change the suspension setting to suit ‘rider only’, ‘rider with luggage’, ‘rider and passenger’ or ‘rider and passenger with luggage’.

Lightweight construction - Constantly reducing weight is part of the design brief for all Ducati models. Less weight enables maximum performances both in terms of dynamic behaviour and safety. A lighter motorcycle will brake in a shorter distance, accelerate faster and be easier to steer. Every single component of the Multistrada 1200, therefore, has been designed to achieve weight reduction without compromising its load-bearing capacity. With a dry weight of just 189kg (417lb) the Multistrada 1200 is lighter than any other road enduro, touring or sport touring bike currently available in this category. The lightweight and excellent chassis set-up ensures exceptional handling, a key factor for Sport, Touring, Urban or Enduro riding.

Trellis frame - The Ducati signature Trellis frame uses large diameter, light gauge tubing with two central cast aluminium sections and a Trellis rear subframe. The frame has 19% more torsional rigidity than the Multistrada 1100.

Single-sided swingarm - The single-sided rear swingarm is also a good example of Ducati’s blend of design and functional engineering. It is made using a single piece casting, with fabricated and welded sections creating a strong, hollow and lightweight component that contributes considerably to the Multistrada’s sure-footed handling.

EQUIPMENT

Stowage - Two handy onboard stowage areas are built into the motorcycle, one suitable for mobile phones or toll road tickets situated in the right cockpit side panel and a larger 3 litre area situated under the passenger seat.

Touring Edition - Characterised by the ABS and DES by Öhlins systems, the 'S' version Touring edition focuses on comfort and cargo for long-distance travel with handy heated grips, 57 litres of stylish side luggage and a centre stand for practicality.

Pirelli Scorpion Trail - Ducati’s technical partner, Pirelli, worked alongside the Multistrada’s engineers throughout the project, developing the new Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyres specifically for the Multistrada 1200. The new tyres represent the first ever dual compound for on/off road use with a harder compound central section. Combined with a special tread design and carcass structure, their 190/55 section delivers racing performance on the road in terms of grip and lean angles, while ensuring high mileage for touring and good off-road performance. The new generation tyres are purposely designed for the Multistrada’s four-bikes-in-one concept.

Adjustable screen - The Multistrada 1200’s screen is designed with 60mm of vertical adjustment to ensure efficient wind protection for all rider heights and effortless high-speed riding over long distances.

ABS - The Multistrada 1200 offers a Bosch-Brembo ABS system, which is fitted as original equipment. It delivers outstanding braking performance in all conditions and provides a major contribution towards performance safety. An option to disable the ABS is available via the instrumentation, but is automatically reactivated at the next ignition-on.

Lighting - The headlight is a characteristic feature of the face of the Multistrada 1200, its symmetrical layout uses four halogen lamps, two for low and two for high beam to provide excellent illumination. In addition, the front and rear side lights use LEDs, and feature a special shape of intense light guidance, making the motorcycle more visible to other road users.

Power sockets - Two 12v power outlets situated on either side of the area below the rider’s seat can be used to power up to 8A (fused) accessories such as thermal apparel, intercoms or mobile phone chargers. In addition, a special connection point for powering the GARMIN satellite navigator (optional feature) is situated near the instrumentation.

DTC - The racing-derived DTC is a highly intelligent system which acts as a filter between the rider’s right hand and the rear tyre. Within milliseconds, DTC is able to detect and then control rear wheel-spin, considerable increasing the bike’s safety and performance. The system offers eight ‘levels of sensitivity’, each programmed with a level of rear wheel-spin tolerance in line with progressive levels of riding skills classified from one to eight. Level one is programmed to offer the least amount of interaction while level eight uses the most amount of interaction. DTC is an integral part of the pre-programmed Riding Modes on the Multistrada 1200; however, its setting can be customised by the rider.

On-board computer - The on-board computer system is made up of a large, high visibility LCD with the main data and a dot-matrix circular LCD which visualises various functions according to whether the bike is stationary or moving.

Urban Riding Mode

As navigation of the urban jungle can require an even more user-friendly motorcycle, the Urban Riding Mode instantly transforms the Multistrada 1200 into the most manageable, everyday transport. Power output is reduced to 100hp, and the suspension, on the ‘S’ version, to a setting perfect for tackling the maze of city streets full of speed bumps and drain covers. DTC is further enhanced to level 6 to provide high system intervention during the most chaotic of stop-start traffic.

Enduro Riding Mode

Should the journey aboard the Multistrada 1200 leave the beaten track, it has the capability to take off-road routes in its stride. Agile and lightweight and with high, wide handlebars, serrated footrests and specially designed tyres, the Multistrada also features an Enduro Riding Mode which instantly produces a smooth 100hp engine, immediately dials-in an appropriate suspension setting on the ‘S’ version and reduces the DTC system to level 2 for minimal intervention.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY

Ride-by-Wire

The Ride-by-Wire (RbW) system is an electronic interface between the twistgrip and the engine which decides the ideal power response depending on the Riding Mode selected and according to the rider’s throttle input. The twistgrip no longer uses a throttle cable to control the throttle body butterflies, but instead delivers a signal to a control unit, which in turn operates the butterfly opening.

The RbW system enables the use of three different mappings to regulate the power delivery. The three maps offer 150hp with a sports-type delivery, 150hp with a progressive delivery suitable for touring and 100hp with progressive delivery for city or off-road use.

Ducati Electronic Suspension by Öhlins

The ‘S’ version of the Multistrada 1200 is equipped with the latest generation 48mm Öhlins forks featuring the innovative Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES). The new fork technology enables rebound and compression damping adjustments electronically controlled via the instrument panel.

In addition to the Riding Mode of Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro, there is also an option to quickly change the suspension setting to suit ‘rider only’, ‘rider with luggage’, ‘rider and passenger’ or ‘rider and passenger with luggage’.

Hands-free ignition

The Multistrada 1200 ignition is not actuated with a normal key. Instead, an electronic key in the rider’s pocket communicates with the Multistrada when within a distance of approximately 2 metres (6.5ft), recognising the dedicated key code and automatically enabling the motorcycle’s systems. Pressing the keyon switch then activates all systems to ‘on’ and the engine is ready to be started.

The electronic key, which internally consists of a radio circuit, externally doubles as a mechanical flip-key, required to open the seat and fuel tank cap. When parking the motorcycle an electronic locking device can be actuated on the steering simply by applying full steering-lock and pressing the ignition-off button a second time.

Ducati Traction Control

The racing-derived Ducati Traction Control (DTC) is a highly intelligent system which acts as a filter between the rider’s right hand and the rear tyre. Within milliseconds, DTC is able to detect and then control rear wheel-spin, considerably increasing the bike’s active safety and performance.

The system offers eight ‘levels of sensitivity’, each programmed with a level of rear wheel-spin tolerance in line with progressive levels of riding skills classified from one to eight. Level one is programmed to offer the least amount of interaction while level eight uses the most amount of interaction. DTC is an integral part of the pre-programmed Riding Modes on the Multistrada 1200.

The system uses front and rear wheel sensors to compare speed differential and sense when rear traction is being broken (wheel-spin). DTC then decides the best combination of two different types of instant electronic adjustment, calculated with data supplied from multiple sources.

Red lights around the circular Riding Mode section of the instrumentation illuminate to indicate the interaction of the DTC system. As soon as the system recognises the gradual return of equal wheel speeds, it incrementally re-establishes normal power delivery. This seamless interaction is key to the super-smooth operation of the system.

The real innovative thinking behind the DTC system is how the various range of sensitivity levels decide precisely how to react to excessive wheel-spin by understanding the bike's exact 'dynamic situation'. From slow mid-corner acceleration with considerable vehicle inclination to high speed corner exits while almost upright, this 'system intelligence' is achieved by processing a mass of data in a matter of milliseconds.

DTC levels are factory pre-set in each of the four Riding Modes, but can be individually customised and saved to suit the rider by accessing the set-up menu within each one. A ‘Default’ option is available to easily return all settings to factory pre-sets.

Instrumentation

The instrumentation has a large, high visibility LCD showing all main data and a dot-matrix circular LCD which displays the Riding Modes, additional data or set-up menus depending on whether the bike is stationary or moving.

The main LCD displays data for speed, rpm, gear, total mileage, trip1/trip2, engine coolant temperature, fuel level and time. When the motorcycle is in motion, the dot-matrix LCD displays the selected Riding Mode, remaining fuel/distance, current fuel consumption, average fuel consumption, average speed, air temperature, trip time, and ‘freezing conditions’ alarm. When stationary, it enters a setting menu from where adjustments to the various functions can be made including personalised DTC set-up and, on the ‘S’ version, suspension settings.

The Sport, Touring, Urban or Enduro Riding Modes can be changed while either stationary or in motion, as well as load settings for ‘rider only’, ‘rider with luggage’, ‘rider and passenger’ or ‘rider and passenger with luggage’.

MULTISTRADA POWER

Testastretta 11°: The ideal travelling companion

The heart of the highly complex and innovative Multistrada 1200 project is the engine and, as a prestigious model, the motorcycle had to be powered by an advanced and evolved twin-cylinder engine - the Testastretta Evoluzione engine that powers the world-beating 1198.

The challenge, however, was to produce an engine that would be enjoyable to use in all conditions and able to adapt to the rider’s character and not the other way around. Making the race-derived L-Twin engine performance smoother and more user-friendly was a challenge, but Ducati’s innovative designers and engineers met the challenge by designing the revolutionary Testastretta 11° engine. Their achievement succeeded in harnessing the immense power of the Superbike engine, making it smooth and adaptable to suit to any occasion, a significant step forward in balancing performance with usability.

For a motorcycle intended for touring, the smoothness and user-friendliness of the engine is key to achieving an effortless and comfortable ride and the main engine characteristic that enabled this configuration was the revision of the valve overlap angle.

The overlap angle is defined as the interval of crankshaft rotation, measured in degrees, during which both the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time. This overlap occurs between the end of the exhaust stroke and the start of the intake stroke. On the Testastretta 11° engine, this angle has been reduced from 41°, used in the Testastretta Evoluzione engine which powered the 1198 Superbike, and as a result, the fresh inlet charge flow is less compromised by the exiting exhaust gases, resulting in a much
smoother combustion, improved fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions. Unburnt hydrocarbon emissions (pre-catalyser) are reduced by up to 65% and specific fuel consumption (and consequent CO2 emissions) by up to 12% (Euro3).

With its 150hp and 12.1kgm (87.5lb-ft) of torque, the Testastretta 11° set a new standard for Ducati twincylinder engines. Fluid dynamics testing on ports and combustion chambers resulted in a modified power delivery profile, specifically the torque. New intake and exhaust ports combined with a radical adjustment of the cam timing and slight reduction of the compression ratio have enabled Ducati to achieve a favourable torque curve at low rpm, which remains strong through a wider range. This particular characteristic considerably enhances the Multistrada 1200’s effortless ridability.

The Multistrada 1200 features an oil bath clutch with ‘slipper’ function and super-light feel at the lever.

The layout for the exhaust system, which is simple and minimalistic, uses two primary manifolds flowing directly into the triple chamber single silencer. In addition to carrying out the 2-1-2 compensator function, the silencer contains the catalyser and sound-absorbent materials. The two compact and lightweight aluminium alloy end pipes depart in a low, lateral configuration to keep the overall weight to a minimum. More strada between major services.

Constant investment in quality by design, advanced materials and engineering techniques, has enabled the distance between major service intervals (valve clearance check) to be doubled to a highly competitive 24,000km (15,000 miles). This has been achieved partly by the introduction of a new valve seat material and partly by the improved combustion efficiency and temperature management designed into the Testastretta 11° engine.

INNOVATIVE DESIGN

192kg (423lb) Multistrada sets the benchmark

Constantly reducing weight is part of the design brief for all Ducati models. Less weight enables maximum performance both in terms of dynamic behaviour and safety. A lighter motorcycle will brake in a shorter distance, accelerate faster and be easier to steer. Every single component of the Multistrada 1200, therefore, has been designed to achieve weight reduction without compromising its load-bearing capacity.

With a dry weight of just 192kg (423lb) the Multistrada 1200 is lighter than any other road enduro, touring or sport touring bike currently available in this category. The lightweight and excellent chassis set-up ensures exceptional handling, a key factor for Sport, Touring, Urban or Enduro riding.

Ergonomics and comfort

The Multistrada 1200 was subjected to an extensive ergonomic study using both CAD and repeated prototype testing, guaranteeing a high level of comfort with a fully loaded motorcycle for long-range touring.

The wide, tapered steel handlebars have been designed for maximum comfort and ensure a commanding riding position enhanced by a generous steering lock of 76° (38° left and right). In addition, the handlebars have been mounted on anti-vibration isolators, specially designed to balance riding comfort with a precise road ‘feel’.

The Multistrada 1200 seat immediately transmits a sense of comfort and for 2012 has been further enhanced with more length front and rear for the rider.

The footpeg position represents part of the optimum ‘ergonomics triangle’ for both the rider and passenger with added consideration to ground clearance during maximum lean angle and position of side luggage. The footpegs have rubber inserts that insulate vibration, removable to expose a motocross-style serrated edge that provides enhanced boot grip when riding off-road.

The Multistrada 1200’s rear view mirrors have both vertical and horizontal adjustment and increased surface area to provide the most efficient visibility. Two handy onboard stowage areas are built into the motorcycle, one suitable for a mobile phone or toll road tickets situated in the right cockpit side panel and a larger three litre area situated under the passenger seat.

Ideal for long journeys

The Multistrada 1200’s screen is designed with 60mm of vertical adjustment to ensure efficient wind protection for all rider heights and effortless high-speed riding over long distances. Two 12v power outlets situated on either side of the area below the rider’s seat can be used to power up to 8A (fused) accessories such as thermal apparel, intercoms or mobile phone chargers. In addition, a special connection point for powering the GARMIN satellite navigator (optional feature) is situated near the instrumentation.

The Touring edition of the Multistrada 1200 S adds even more comfort and convenience. Easily controlled heated grips, which have a revised power feed to the twistgrip for 2012, are ideal for journeys where adverse weather conditions threaten rider comfort, while stylish side luggage offers a load capacity of 57 litres and a fast and secure attachment system that blends perfectly when removed. In addition, a centre stand provides parking confidence when fully loaded and essential security in the event of tyre maintenance during long journeys.

Character

For Ducati, design is not just creating an attractive look.

Components that are far more than just aesthetic detail, include the frontal air intakes that characterise the face of the Multistrada and also deliver air to the oil cooler and airbox, and the beautifully formed aluminium sump guard and side plates that help to protect the engine off-road.

The single-sided rear swingarm is also a good example of Ducati’s blend of design and functional engineering. It is made using a single piece casting, with fabricated and welded sections creating a strong, hollow and lightweight component that contributes considerably to the Multistrada’s sure-footed handling.

The headlight is a characteristic feature of the face of the Multistrada 1200, its symmetrical layout uses four halogen lamps, two for low and two for high beam to provide excellent illumination. In addition, the front and rear side lights use LEDs, and feature a special shape of intense light guidance, making the motorcycle more visible to other road users.

MULTISTRADA CHASSIS

Design

All components used in the construction of the Multistrada 1200 are of the highest quality. Their selection and subsequent assembly is the result of a design brief based on uncompromised performance.

Chassis geometry, such as wheelbase, swingarm length, and rake, trail and offset is the result of a quest for the best balance of stability at high speeds and dynamic agility. The chassis is designed to achieve lean angles of up to 45° and the combination of reduced weight and generous steering lock of 76° (38° left and right) makes tight manoeuvres at low speeds easy to manage.

Frame

The Ducati signature Trellis frame uses large diameter, light gauge tubing with two central cast aluminium sections and a Trellis rear subframe to achieve optimum torsional rigidity. The high pressure, die cast, magnesium front sub-frame reduces the high, frontal weight and contributes to chassis feel and control.

Suspension

The standard version Multistrada 1200 uses 50mm Marzocchi front forks, featuring a special forged fork bottom and full adjustability in spring pre-load, compression and rebound damping. The rear is controlled by a Sachs monoshock adjustable in compression and rebound damping and in spring pre-load by using the handy remote manual adjuster.

The ‘S’ version features the front and rear Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES) system by Öhlins. The 48mm Öhlins forks are adjustable electronically in compression and rebound damping while spring pre-load is manual. The Öhlins TTX rear unit features twin tube technology to offer totally separate damping adjustment in compression and rebound and uses experience gained in racing to minimise friction and reduce the risk of cavitation under extreme conditions. In addition, the unit is fully adjustable electronically
in compression and rebound damping as well as spring pre-load.

The front and rear suspension of both versions provide 170mm of travel, the extra-long movement ensuring excellent comfort even when fully loaded or if the rider decides to leave the asphalt for off-road routes.

Braking system & ABS

The front brakes use twin radially-mounted Brembo four piston, two pad callipers actuated by a master cylinder with an adjustable lever. The fronts grip 320mm discs, while a single 245mm disc on the rear is gripped by a single Brembo calliper. Typical of all Ducatis, these components ensure high performance braking and set the standard in this segment.

The Multistrada 1200 and 1200 S are both fitted with a Bosch-Brembo ABS system as standard equipment, delivering outstanding braking performances in all conditions and providing a major contribution towards performance safety. An option to disable the ABS is available via the instrumentation, but is automatically reactivated at the next ignition-on.

Wheels and tyres

Ducati’s technical partner, Pirelli, worked alongside the Multistrada’s engineers throughout the project, developing the new Pirelli Scorpion Trail tyres specifically for the four-bikes-in-one concept. The tyres represent the first ever dual compound for on/off road use with a harder compound central section.

Combined with a special tread design and carcass structure, their 190/55 section delivers racing performance on the road in terms of grip and lean angles, while ensuring high mileage for touring and good off-road performance. The Multistrada 1200 rides on lightweight 10-spoke lightweight alloy wheels, 3.50x17 front and 6.00x17 rear. All colours of Multistrada 1200 use wheels finished in black.

Colours

The Multistrada 1200 is available in red or arctic white while the 1200 ‘S’ Sport is dedicated to red and the ‘S’ Touring offers red and arctic white, all with frames finished in racing grey. The ‘S’ Touring schemes are now extended for 2012 with the new matte race titanium with racing black frame. Released early as a model year 2012, the Multistrada 1200 S Pikes Peak Special Edition comes proudly dressed in the Ducati Corse official colours of red, white and black with red frame. All models in the Multistrada family roll on wheels finished in black.
