2012 MV Agusta F3 Oro Review

In keeping with the traditions of the brand, volume production of the new F3 will be preceded by a small series of limited edition “Serie Oro” versions appealing to enthusiasts of Italian engineering excellence.

These exclusive models, of which a maximum of 200 examples will be built only to special order, differ from the standard version via a multitude of details, both in terms of aesthetics and engineering.

The F3 Serie Oro is immediately recognized by the gold frame plates and single-sided swingarm, as well as the forged aluminium wheels painted the same colour. The deliberately minimalist graphics subtly emphasise the lines of the bike, as well as identifying it.

The sensuous bodywork design is characterised by a special paint scheme which accentuates its shapely form. The final result is a striking reinterpretation of the traditional MV Agusta silver and red livery. Even the rear view mirrors are painted, and the seat subframe matches the colour of the F3s tubular spaceframe. The clutch cover and the frame plates are machine polished, while the alternator cover is completely milled from solid, providing these components with the hand-made feel that makes each MV unique. The attention to detail extends to the air intakes and cooling exits, which have a gold finish, as well as the DID Gold final drive chain. The completely hand made covering of both rider and passenger seats employs real leather and alcantara, giving the Serie Oro the ultimate touch of elegance. As usual with MV Agusta Serie Oro models, a gold plate mounted on the upper tripleclamp identifying each individually numbered bike, completes this picture of exclusivity.

Several mechanical parts are unique to the Serie Oro models, exemplified by the outstanding Brembo brake system, with radially-mounted Monobloc one-piece calipers gripping Racing discs. Fully adjustable Öhlins upside down forks, TTX shock and steering damper collectively represent the ultimate in suspension. The spaceframe chassis and seat subframe are TIG-welded, guaranteeing a strong, stiff structure and a highly refined aesthetic appearance. With the objective of allowing each rider to optimise the riding position, the footrests and their mounting plates are machined from solid, and are fully adjustable, as are the gearchange and rear brake levers.

The F3s carbon fibre components add a unique richness to the bike. The front and rear mudguards, dashboard cover, airbox side and intake covers, fairing inserts, both upper and lower chain guards, swingarm protector cover, sprocket cover, fairing lower, and stacked exhaust outlets are all manufactured in this lightweight, good-looking material, each one carefully manufactured and covered with a transparent protective finish.

About the F3 series:

The new MV. A new work of art on wheels is arriving that will upset the balance of power. As with all MV’s this new model is synonymous with excellence, style and technology. The new F3 will apply these principles to a new market segment, the middle weight supersport category.

If the F4, considered the most beautiful motorcycle in the world, set the styling and performance standards by which all others are judged, the new F3 has completely exceeded all previous conceptions of what a supersport motorcycle should be, redefining an entirely new category. Light weight, power and electronics working in complete harmony on a new motorcycle that pushes the concept of supersport to the extreme.

Powerful, hyper-light and more compact than any other motorcycle in existence. The F3 sets the new standard by which all other supersport motorcycles will be judged and compared. A completely new project that was created by CRC, the research center that has continually designed and developed the motorcycles of dreams.

The styling is pure MV Agusta, as with its big sister the F4, but the F3 is even more unique. The new “middle weight” by MV follows the philosophy of all the MV Agusta works of art while pushing the limits of the supersport category with a maniacal attention to detail. The exhaust system has a triple pipe side exit muffler and is the perfect example of how design and function coincide perfectly. There is no doubt, the new F3 is a true MV Agusta

2012 MV Agusta F3 Oro Features and Benefits

MV F3: Engine

The powerplant of the new F3, an inline 675cc three cylinder, plays homage to the most victorious motorcycle brand in the word. With this layout MV raced and won an unprecedented number of races and world championship titles. This iconic engine has now returned in the form of an avant- garde middle weight supersport with performance technical solutions based on the demands of Claudio Castiglioni who is convinced that this is the ideal architecture for a middle weight supersport. The engine is the most compact, incredible short and narrow engine ever seen in this category. The powerplant is incredibly modern in design, technologically advanced and capable of generating the most power ever seen in this category. One of the numerous technical features is the counter- rotating crankshaft, never before seen on a production supersport engine.

MV F3: Electronics

The most advanced electronic engine control system has been designed specifically for this extraordinary three cylinder. For the first time on an MV (and in the middle weight supersport category) there is Ride By Wire with multi-maps that optimize the power output in all riding conditions. The MV TC traction control has been incorporated into the engine control system raising the dynamic control to a new level on the F3.

MV F3: Chassis

As always, those who ride MV Agusta’s have become accustomed to having the very best components and the maximum performance from the chassis. The new F3 follows this tradition with a level of quality that exceeds most of the 1000cc superbikes on the market. As with all previous MV’s, the advanced frame design incorporates a mix of steel tubing and aluminum side plates that wrap around the ultra compact engine offering a level of compactness never before seen on a supersport motorcycle. The compact engine dimensions left the maximum liberty to design the most advanced chassis on the market with an exceptionally long single sided swingarm that guarantees traction and feedback to the rider. The components, as always, are of the highest quality. The Marzocchi front fork is completely adjustable as well as the Sachs rear shock. The front brake system consists of a Nissin radial master cylinder and Brembo radial calipers and discs. It is simply the best and the new standard by which all other middleweight supersport bikes will be judged.

THREE CYLINDERS, MADE IN ITALY

The dominance of MV Agusta in the motorcycle Grand Prix’s is in part due to their most victorious engine design. Of the 37 world titles won by the bikes from Cascina Costa, 10 are attributed to the bikes with the inline three cylinder engines. MV Agusta was the first motorcycle manufacturer in the world to believe in this technical solution, a risk that paid off with countless victories. The three cylinder project began as a twin cam 350 followed by a 500cc version, these bikes were legendary for their power as well as their lighter weight and improved aerodynamics compared to the 4 cylinder competition.

The project was designed at the request of Count Agusta, developed on the race track by Giacomo Agostini and raced by the greatest champions of all time winning immediately. Initially the 350 twin cam, followed by the 500 twin cam, these motorcycles became the reference point for all of the other manufacturers as they offered unmatched performance allowing them to dominate the competition. This dominance was translated into 10 world championship titles, 9 Italian championships and 215 race wins. The MV three cylinder was a motorcycle unequaled by the competition by applying technology that was advanced for its time and destined to become the future for all high performance engines.

Even today, the classic three cylinder MV Agusta is an example for the rational application of technology and pure styling. A style so unique that it transcends to the soul of the MV’s of today. Having to choose which engine layout would power the new MV Agusta middle weight, Claudio Castiglioni chose the most rational configuration of the three cylinder. A choice that is technically advanced while at the same time respects the long history of MV Agusta and their countless successes with this engine layout. Today, as well as in the past, the F3 takes advantage of a very compact design, advanced technology and unparalleled power.

With the new F3, history and future are fused into a single entity giving form to the most beautiful and technologically advanced “600”, a motorcycle that clearly marks the beginning of a new era.

PROVEN OUTSTANDING RELIABILITY

Victory has a track record of consistently outstanding reliability and dependability, which has led to the industry's highest customer satisfaction ratings. This proven reliability, along with the new transmission design, allows Victory to recommend extended oil service intervals for 2011 drivetrains.

• The recommended oil change interval for 2011 models is every 5,000 miles (8,000 km).
• Less-frequent oil changes results in a lower cost of ownership.

NEW TRANSMISSION

The Victory drivetrain team scrutinized every component of the engine and transmission and fine-tuned the designs and performance of numerous parts. Approximately 40% of the drivetrain is new for 2011, with the transmission receiving so many improvements it is virtually a new transmission.

The changes: improved manufacturing efficiency and quality assurance; enhanced drivetrain's already-impressive reliability; improved engine performance; and, for riders, improved ridability and delivered a more appealing-sounding transmission.

• In terms of operating sound, selected modulation frequencies have been eliminated. This produces a more-appealing sound - consistently in each gear. In 4th and 6th gears in particular, gear whine has been reduced.
• Driveline lash has been reduced by 66%.
• "Neutral Assist" has been added to make it easier for a rider to shift into neutral when stopped. This will reduce the rider's effort, will reduce clutch wear and will lessen the performance demands on the oil.

ENHANCED INSTRUMENTATION

All cruisers now have instrumentation similar to that of the Victory Cross Roads, which provides a rider with a wealth of information in one, easy-to-read location. The new instrumentation includes:

• An analog speedometer, which may be set to show MPH or KPH.
• Blue backlighting.
• A large LCD that displays: Clock (time of day is viewable at all times), gear position, tachometer and diagnostic readouts for Victory dealership service technicians.
• The gauge face includes lights such as high-beam and neutral indicators and the oil warning light. Cruisers no longer have these indicator lights atop the triple clamps.
• The Cross Roads instrumentation also has an always-viewable fuel gauge.

CHASSIS CHANGES ACROSS THE LINEUP

All brake calipers, rotors, lower belt guards, and floorboards are black.

• All left- and right-hand switch cubes are black, as are the audio control switch block and cruise control switch block.
• The triple clamp is black on all models except the Vegas Jackpot (which retains its chrome triple), and the Victory Cross Roads (which retains its brushed finish).
• A new side stand on each model features an integrated hooked-end design for easy locating and easy control of the side stand.
• All cruiser exhausts have a larger outlet for improved sound quality and a lower exhaust note.

2012 Victory Vegas 8-Ball Model Highlights

• Low seat height (25.2 inches)
• Blacked out pipes and headlight
• Black stingray wheels

2012 Victory Vegas 8-Ball Features and Benefits

106 CUBIC-INCH FREEDOM V-TWIN
Whether you're finding your way across town or cruising the city's glass canyons, the Freedom V-Twin power plant delivers 97 horsepower and 113 ft lbs of green-light torque with ultimate authority. The heart of every Victory Cruiser machine, it informs the world of your arrival with every crack of the throttle.

6-SPEED OVERDRIVE TRANSMISSION
The best performing transmission on the street collects the power generated by the massive V-twin and allows the Vegas 8-Ball to roll fluidly between the curbs. Helical-cut gears ensure that each shift will be as smooth and clean as the bike itself.

113 FT LBS TORQUE
Press the starter and you can feel deep in your chest an eruption of low-end torque. With each precision-tuned piston stroke, the Freedom V-Twin's 4-valve overhead cams and perfectly matched 6-speed overdrive transmission promise to provide unmatched throttle response, acceleration and passing power.

LOW SEAT HEIGHT
The low 25.2" seat height works in tandem with the pulled-back handlebars to ensure a firm sense of mastery over the machine. Combine that with a more rearward placement of the foot controls and you have a rider who stays comfortable from A to B and all the way to Z.

BLACKED OUT PIPES AND HEADLIGHT
Leave it up to the Vegas 8-Ball to take you where no bike has gone before. Blacked out pipes and black bullet headlight take you to the dark side, which leads to the kind of performance that has every other motorcycle scurrying for the light.

BLACK STINGRAY WHEELS
The Vegas 8-Ball's high contrast wheels complement the bike's black styling and deliver smooth, reliable performance. At speed they become fully reminiscent of a storm cloud coming on fast.

STREAMLINED SOLO SEAT
What's good for the rider also happens to be good for the bike. The Vegas 8-Ball's low seat provides a comfortable riding position but also complements the smooth, low profile of the machine.
